By Joe Lorio Published: Mar 18, 2026 The 2027 BMW i3 is a new mid-size electric sedan that shares a newly developed architecture with the BMW iX3 SUV. The new i3 is roughly the size of the gas-powered 3-series, but the EV launches with a dual-motor all-wheel-drive powertrain that makes 463 hp. The i3 is set to go on sale later this year, though BMW hasn’t yet released pricing.
BMW’s \”Neue Klasse\” mid-size cars of the 1960s saved the company. Now, BMW is using that term again, this time for a new generation of electric vehicles: the iX3 SUV and the i3 mid-size sedan. Their mission isn’t quite as critical as their predecessors’, but there’s still a lot riding on this latest new class of cars. The i3 Returns in a Neue Way The i3 is a nameplate we’ve seen before—on another pioneering model, a quirky city car offered as a pure EV or with an optional range extender. The new one is unrelated to the previous model. Instead, the model designation identifies it as the EV counterpart to the 3-series sedan, in the same way the i5 is analogous to the 5-series and the i7 to the 7-series. Compared with the current 3-series, the i3 is 1.6 inches longer overall, 1.5 inches wider, and 1.6 inches taller. It sits astride a wheelbase that has grown by nearly 2 inches. This one, used also by the iX3, features an 800-volt electrical architecture that’s capable of ingesting juice at up to 400 kW (should we someday have public chargers that powerful). An NACS port is standard, with CCS compatibility via an adapter. The top AC charger in the U.S. will be a 15.4-kW unit. Its battery pack, which is a structural element in the car, has cells that are 20 percent more energy dense than those in the bigger BMW EVs; total battery capacity is 109 kWh. BMW estimates a maximum range of around 440 miles based on the EPA’s testing procedure. In the i3 50 xDrive model, those cells feed two motors that produce 463 horsepower and 476 pound-feet of torque (output for other i3 models hasn’t yet been revealed). The computing power behind the i3 is new as well, consisting of four supercomputers, each controlling a group of functions. They’re claimed to have 20 times the computing power of past models, while also reducing weight and complexity. A Look Inside the i3
The i3’s interior layout echoes that of the iX3 and marks a major departure from other current Bimmers. A shallow screen at the base of the windshield spans the width of the dashboard. BMW calls it Panoramic iDrive. The screen is divided into sections, with the part immediately in front of the driver showing instrument-cluster info, such as vehicle speed, while the information in the other sections is customizable. There’s also a nearly 18-inch center touchscreen; its parallelogram shape is designed to put more functions within easy reach of the driver. A head-up display is available too. The novel steering wheel features spokes at the top and bottom, but not at the sides. If that’s too weird, an optional M Sport steering wheel has spokes at the 4- and 8-o’clock positions. View Interior Photos BMW Exterior Styling: A New Face for a New Era The exterior design of the 2027 BMW i3 represents a significant departure from the brand’s traditional styling cues while still paying homage to its heritage. The front fascia features a reimagined kidney grille, which, while still recognizable as a BMW trademark, has been updated to accommodate the needs of an electric vehicle. This grille incorporates advanced sensor technology and active air-management systems, contributing to the car’s aerodynamic efficiency. The headlights have been restyled to create a more modern and aggressive look. Instead of the traditional dual-round headlights, the i3 sports a sleek, horizontally oriented design that flows seamlessly into the grille. This creates a wider, more imposing stance, emphasizing the car’s premium positioning in the market. The lighting elements themselves utilize advanced LED technology, offering adaptive lighting functions that enhance visibility and safety. Moving along the side profile, the i3 exhibits a clean and uncluttered design. The body lines are smooth and flowing, with a coupe-like roofline that enhances its sporty character. The door handles are flush with the bodywork, retracting when not in use to further improve aerodynamics. The window trim is finished in gloss black, adding a touch of elegance and sportiness. At the rear, the i3’s design continues to emphasize its modern and electric identity. The taillights are slim and wraparound, mirroring the horizontal theme of the headlights. The rear bumper is sculpted to manage airflow effectively, and there are no visible exhaust pipes, as expected in an EV. The overall rear design is clean and sophisticated, maintaining the premium feel of the car. One of the most striking aspects of the i3’s exterior is its commitment to sustainability. BMW has utilized a range of recycled and renewable materials in its construction, including recycled aluminum and sustainable plastics. This focus on eco-friendly materials is not only a nod to the car’s electric nature but also reflects BMW’s broader commitment to reducing its environmental impact. The exterior design successfully balances the need for aerodynamic efficiency with the brand’s design language, creating a vehicle that is both visually appealing and technologically advanced. Powertrain and Performance: Electrifying Power The 2027 BMW i3 marks a significant step forward in BMW’s electrification strategy. Underpinning the i3 is BMW’s next-generation electric vehicle architecture, which has been designed from the ground up to support a range of electric models. This new platform, also used in the iX3 SUV, features an 800-volt electrical system that enables ultra-fast charging capabilities. This system allows the i3 to take advantage of the latest high-speed public chargers, with support for charging speeds of up to 400 kW. In terms of battery technology, the i3 utilizes a state-of-the-art battery pack that is integrated into the vehicle’s structure. This not only improves rigidity but also contributes to better weight distribution and handling. The battery cells themselves are 20 percent more energy-dense than those found in BMW’s current generation of EVs, allowing for a total capacity of 109 kWh. This significant battery capacity, combined with the car’s aerodynamic efficiency, enables an impressive EPA-estimated range of around 440 miles on a single charge. Performance-wise, the i3 50 xDrive model delivers exhilarating acceleration and dynamic handling. Powered by a dual-motor all-wheel-drive system, it produces a combined output of 463 horsepower and 476 pound-feet of torque. This powertrain allows the i3 to sprint from 0 to 60 mph in just 4.5 seconds, making it a genuinely quick car. The electric motors provide instant torque, ensuring that the car feels responsive and eager to accelerate at any speed. The all-wheel-drive system is electronically controlled, allowing for precise torque distribution between the front and rear axles. This not only enhances traction in slippery conditions but also allows for a degree of torque vectoring, which improves cornering ability and driver engagement. The i3’s chassis has been specifically tuned for electric performance, with a low center of gravity and a well-balanced weight distribution. For charging, the i3 comes standard with a NACS port, reflecting the industry’s shift towards this standard. CCS compatibility is available via an adapter, providing flexibility for EV owners. At home, the car can be charged using a Level 2 charger, with the top AC charging rate in the U.S. being 15.4 kW. This allows for a full charge overnight, making the i3 a practical choice for daily driving. Interior Design and Technology: A Digital Cockpit
The interior of the 2027 BMW i3 represents a significant departure from BMW’s traditional cabin design philosophy. The focal point of the interior is the Panoramic iDrive system, a massive curved display that spans the width of the dashboard. This innovative display combines the instrument cluster and infotainment system into a single, seamless unit. The driver’s portion of the display provides essential information such
