Full Story: T1407025_Weak Animal Cries Until Someone Notices BWM: A Gigantic SUV Could Be On The Horizon The United States has an undeniable appetite for massive vehicles, and manufacturers are listening. By Alex Thompson Senior Automotive Analyst March 26, 2026 The automotive landscape in 2026 is a fascinating study in consumer demand. Here in the United States, we’ve cemented our reputation as unapologetic lovers of large vehicles, particularly SUVs. This isn’t a fleeting trend; it’s a well-established market dynamic that manufacturers like Chevrolet, Ford, Lincoln, Cadillac, Nissan, and Toyota have capitalized on for years with their portfolio of behemoth utility vehicles. However, for BMW, the question of size has always been handled with a degree of restraint. Until now, perhaps. For a significant portion of the automotive industry, the recipe for success in the U.S. market has involved scaling up. BMW, too, has reaped substantial rewards from this strategy, with the X5 and the X7 emerging as pillars of its North American sales strategy. The X7, BMW’s current flagship SUV, stands as the largest vehicle the German automaker offers to the public. Yet, recent discussions and market analyses suggest that the Bavarian brand might be reconsidering its size limitations. It appears the company is genuinely exploring the prospect of introducing a model that would dwarf even the considerable dimensions of the X7. A New Contender in the Ultra-Luxury Segment? The conversation surrounding a potentially larger BMW SUV gained significant traction during a recent roundtable discussion in Munich, Germany. During this event, Bernd Koerber, the Senior Vice President of BMW Brand and Product Management, addressed the automaker’s internal contemplations regarding a vehicle positioned above the X7 in the lineup. While Koerber was careful to manage expectations, he did not dismiss the idea outright. He acknowledged that BMW is indeed evaluating the feasibility of such a product, though he refrained from making any concrete commitments regarding its development or release. “It’s still the question of whether that’s the right thing for us to do,” Koerber stated, encapsulating the strategic calculus involved. “Probably BMW could do something that will work in that segment. I would also say yes, why not? Because we were very successful [with] X5 [and] X7. That segment is 80, 90 percent U.S. and 10 percent Middle East, more or less. Inherently, we would also like to look into something that works globally. [The bigger SUV] would be something very U.S.-specific, but that there’s a segment there: Yes, we could offer something that would fit the brand and the segment. That does not mean automatically that it will happen.” This candid assessment comes hot on the heels of remarks made by the head of the BMW National Dealer Forum in January. Speaking with Automotive News, the forum leader articulated a clear vision for the brand’s potential expansion in the U.S. market. He posited that a vehicle in the vein of the segment-defining Infiniti QX80, Cadillac Escalade, and Lincoln Navigator could achieve considerable success on American soil. While such a model remains firmly in the realm of speculation, the suggestion has ignited considerable discussion within the industry and among automotive enthusiasts. Should BMW decide to proceed with this ambitious undertaking, the internal designation rumored to be on the table is the X9. Deconstructing the Dealer’s Perspective The rationale behind the dealer forum leader’s assertion is not difficult to discern. While the current X7 is, without question, a substantial vehicle, its interior accommodations, particularly in the third row and cargo area, leave room for improvement when benchmarked against its direct competitors. Buyers seeking the ultimate in space and versatility—the very attributes that define the full-size luxury SUV category—often find the X7 falling slightly short of the segment’s benchmark, typified by the Escalade. The QX80 and Navigator also command respect in this arena for their sheer presence and capability. It’s crucial to consider the geographical realities of such a vehicle. If an even larger BMW SUV were to materialize, its viability in European markets seems highly questionable. The narrower streets and more congested urban environments characteristic of many European countries would render a vehicle of this magnitude exceptionally cumbersome, if not outright impractical. However, in the vast expanses of the Middle East and the rapidly growing consumer base in China, a vehicle of this size would be met with considerably less resistance. And, of course, here in the United States, a nation where \”bigger is better\” often reigns supreme in the automotive lexicon, such a proposition holds significant promise. The Practical Hurdles to a Bigger BMW Despite the compelling market logic and the enthusiastic backing from dealer networks, several significant hurdles must be cleared before a BMW X9 becomes a reality. The most pressing of these is the fundamental question of manufacturing. Would BMW be willing to invest in the retooling of its production lines to accommodate a vehicle of this unprecedented scale? The existing X7 is already a significant undertaking, and a larger derivative would necessitate a rethinking of the entire manufacturing process. This involves not only the assembly line itself but also the logistical infrastructure required to transport and store these larger vehicles. The financial implications of such an investment are substantial and would need to be weighed carefully against the projected sales volumes. Furthermore, the design and engineering challenges are not trivial. Scaling up an existing platform, while often a more cost-effective solution than developing an entirely new one, is not without its complications. The fundamental architecture of the X7, which is itself a derivative of the X5 platform, would need to be extended and reinforced to support the added weight and dimensions of a larger body. This would require extensive re-engineering of the chassis, suspension, and drivetrain components to ensure that the vehicle retains the refined driving dynamics that are the hallmark of the BMW brand. Maintaining the brand’s reputation for sporty handling and ride comfort while significantly increasing size and weight is a delicate balancing act that would test the engineering prowess of even a company like BMW. Supply chain considerations also come into play. A larger vehicle necessitates larger components—from body panels to interior trim—which may not be readily available from existing suppliers. This could require BMW to forge new partnerships or invest in new tooling for its suppliers, adding another layer of complexity and cost to the project. The timeline for bringing such a vehicle to market would also be extended, as all these factors would need to be meticulously addressed during the development phase. The Competitive Landscape and Market Dynamics The automotive industry in 2026 is characterized by intense competition, particularly in the premium and luxury segments. Any new entrant, regardless of its size, must carve out a distinct identity and offer compelling value to succeed. For BMW, this means that a larger SUV would need to offer something genuinely compelling to differentiate itself from the established players. It couldn’t simply be a larger version of the X7; it would need to offer a distinct proposition that justifies its existence and commands a premium price point. The QX80, Escalade, and Navigator have all cultivated strong followings by offering a blend of luxury, space, and capability that resonates with their target audiences. To compete effectively, a BMW X9 would need to match or exceed these offerings while maintaining the core BMW identity that appeals to its loyal customer base. This is a formidable challenge, but not an insurmountable one for a brand with the resources and expertise of BMW. The Importance of the U.S. Market The very fact that this discussion is taking place underscores the critical importance of the U.S. market to BMW’s global strategy. As Bernd Koerber noted, the market for larger SUVs is overwhelmingly concentrated in the United States, with a smaller but still significant presence in the Middle East. This geographical concentration highlights the need for manufacturers to tailor their product offerings to the specific demands of different regional markets. A strategy that works in Europe or Asia may not be suitable for the U.S., and vice versa. The decision to build a larger SUV would be a clear signal of BMW’s commitment to the U.S. market and its recognition of the unique preferences of American consumers. It would demonstrate a willingness to adapt and innovate to meet those demands, even if it means venturing into territory that is outside the brand’s traditional comfort zone. In an era where automakers are increasingly looking to global platforms to spread development costs, such a move would also signal a willingness to embrace region-specific models when necessary. Exploring the Potential Design and Features Should BMW proceed with the development of an X9, it would present an exciting opportunity for the brand to showcase its design language and technological prowess on an even grander scale. The exterior design would need to balance the imposing presence of a full-size SUV with the sleek, athletic proportions that are characteristic of the BMW brand. This is a difficult feat to achieve, as larger vehicles can easily appear ungainly or ponderous. However, BMW has demonstrated its ability to create visually appealing large vehicles with the X7, and it is likely that the company could apply similar design principles to a larger model. Internally, the X9 would need to offer a level of luxury and refinement that befits its position at the top of the BMW lineup. This would likely involve the use of premium materials, cutting-edge technology, and a focus on passenger comfort. The third row would need to be genuinely usable for adults, offering ample legroom and headroom, as well as easy access. The cargo area would also need to be significantly larger than that of the X7, providing the kind of versatility that buyers in this segment expect. Technology would undoubtedly play a crucial role in the X9’s appeal. BMW is at the forefront of automotive technology, and a flagship SUV would be the perfect showcase for the latest innovations in infotainment, driver assistance systems, and connectivity. The iDrive system, in particular, would likely be the
