For a spell in my teens, I was obsessed with unofficial, unsanctioned lap records. It likely started with a late-night viewing of Jackass’ Gumball 3000 Rally, watching an eccentric owner navigate a battered Jaguar from London to St. Petersburg and back. That sparked a deeper dive into the lore of the Cannonball Run and its legendary successors.
Created by automotive journalism icon Brock Yates in the 1970s as a bold protest against the U.S.’s national 55-mph speed limit, the New York City to Los Angeles Cannonball “rally” represented the pinnacle of automotive endurance challenges. What captivated me even more as a young, impressionable car enthusiast in 2006 was the recent news that a long-standing record had just fallen. An eccentric enthusiast, piloting a modified E39 BMW M5, had sliced the daunting journey down to 31 hours and 4 minutes.
Closer to my Brooklyn roots, that same driver had honed his skills by “lapping” Manhattan in an almost incomprehensible 27 minutes. Back then, my friends and I used to fantasize about breaking that record ourselves. By the time we might have had the financial means to attempt such a feat, the desire had been replaced by a healthy dose of self-preservation instincts.
Still, the allure of unofficial lap records never fully faded. I often found myself wondering about other iconic city circuits. What’s the fastest anyone has ever circumnavigated Washington, D.C.’s Beltway? Or Berlin’s Stadtring? Or Moscow’s formidable ring road? Then, my thoughts turned to my adopted hometown, the sprawling metropolis of Los Angeles.
The Challenge: Defining the Ultimate L.A. Lap
Los Angeles, the undisputed capital of American car culture, presents a uniquely perplexing challenge when it comes to defining a comprehensive lap. The name itself—“Los Angeles”—encompasses a vast, amorphous territory that dominates local and national discourse. Functionally, however, it is merely the largest of 88 distinct cities within the sprawling confines of Los Angeles County. This massive expanse, roughly the size of Connecticut, is dramatically shaped by geography: the heavily populated western and southern flanks are bordered by the Pacific Ocean, a formidable mountain range splits the county’s waist, and the vast Mojave Desert stretches across the northern expanse.
For locals, the concept of the “real” L.A. is as subjective and fiercely debated as the definition of “upstate” New York. (For the record, the correct answer is “anything north of The Bronx.”) The term “L.A.” conjures images of sun-drenched beachside bungalows, the glitz and glamour of Hollywood’s iconic strip, and the soul-crushing reality of traffic-clogged freeways. But it also encompasses the winding, technical precision of canyon roads, the arrow-straight expanses of desert pavement, and the legendary, sweeping vistas of famous boulevards. Piecing together a single, comprehensive lap that captured the essence of these diverse driving environments became an enticing, almost enigmatic, endeavor. However, unlike a circuitous drive around D.C. or a sprint through Manhattan, a true lap of L.A. County would demand more than just speed—it would be a true test of endurance.
Enter the 2026 Chevrolet Corvette ZR1. Building upon the MotorTrend-award-winning foundation of the Corvette Z06—itself engineered to dominate endurance races in its GT3.R guise—the new ZR1 represents the zenith of gasoline-powered American performance. The headline engineering marvel lies behind the driver’s seat: the high-revving, flat-plane-crank 5.5-liter V-8 engine. This powerplant is a heavily fortified derivative of the Z06’s already potent unit, now augmented with twin turbochargers. The journey commences at the historic Point Fermin Lighthouse in San Pedro—the southernmost point of mainland L.A. From this iconic landmark, the route veers east, tracing a path across the vibrant city of Long Beach before making a dramatic ascent into the San Gabriel Mountains via the legendary Angeles Crest Highway.
Upon descending the northern slopes of the mountains, the course dips into the Antelope Valley, traversing the vast desert landscapes before reaching the county’s northernmost perimeter. The return journey takes a dramatic turn to the southwest, utilizing a network of winding canyon roads before merging onto the unavoidable reality of L.A.’s freeway system. This necessary stretch on high-speed arteries eventually leads to the famed and exhilarating Mullholland Highway, which snakes its way through the Malibu mountains. The final leg of the expedition essentially retraces the Pacific coastline southward, looping around the stunning Palos Verdes Peninsula and ultimately returning to the starting point at Point Fermin Lighthouse.
To amplify the difficulty of this epic 10-hour, 335-mile endeavor—and to maximize the visual impact for our photography team—we made the strategic decision to undertake this ambitious lap during daylight hours. The plan was to commence at the break of dawn, greeting the first rays of a late winter sunrise, and to strive to complete the journey before the sun dipped below the horizon. After all, what would an L.A. drive be without a taste of its infamous traffic?
Or, as it turned out, a generous helping of its notorious coastal fog. The 2026 Corvette ZR1 rumbled to a stop at the starting line in the pre-dawn gloom, an ungodly hour for any serious driving endeavor. The Victorian-era Point Fermin Lighthouse, designed to be a conspicuous beacon, was rendered nearly invisible by the dense fog. The atmosphere was so thick that the advanced aerodynamics of the ZR1 were immediately put to work, with the car’s systems visibly managing the airflow around the carbon fiber lip of the front trunk’s radiator outlet and flowing over its muscular rear haunches. The severely limited forward visibility made navigating the narrow, hilly streets of San Pedro a nerve-wracking exercise, and it made distinguishing the soft hues of predawn light from the ambient glow of the distant harbor to the east a frustratingly ambiguous challenge.
We’re Off and Running: Early Morning Mishaps
By 6:24 am, the sun finally managed to pierce through the oppressive fog, offering just enough visibility to proceed. I anxiously pointed the ZR1 northward, my initial objective being to make a sharp right turn onto the iconic Vincent Thomas Bridge. This magnificent structure would carry us across Terminal Island and into the heart of Long Beach, from where we planned to cut through the city’s interior, bypass the Orange County border, and merge onto the 605 freeway.
However, the best-laid plans of drivers often go awry. Almost immediately, an early-morning traffic incident caused a complete closure of the bridge. This unexpected development funneled the ZR1 and the early-morning influx of massive tractor-trailers from the port onto the 110 freeway, effectively hijacking our carefully plotted route. To compound the frustration, as if the universe were conspiring against us, my phone’s navigation app chose that critical moment to crash. I was forced to rely on my own admittedly unreliable memory to attempt to get back on track. Knowing that the key to regaining our intended path was to return to Terminal Island, I detoured off the freeway into the burgeoning morning rush hour traffic of Wilmington. I meticulously picked my way down Pacific Coast Highway, eventually turning onto Henry Ford Avenue.
This historic thoroughfare, along with others like Firestone, Nash, and Studebaker, serves as a tangible reminder of Los Angeles’s glorious past as a global automotive manufacturing hub. Driving down its length, I passed the grounds of facilities that once churned out the iconic Model A,
