Plug-in Hybrid Performance: A New Benchmark At the heart of the 2027 RS5 lies a re-engineered 2.9-liter twin-turbocharged V-6 engine, a powerplant that has defined the RS5 lineage. In this iteration, the engine delivers a formidable 503 horsepower and 443 pound-feet of torque, representing a substantial increase of 66 horsepower over the outgoing model’s 444 horsepower output, while maintaining similar torque levels. Furthermore, the engine benefits from higher injection pressures, a streamlined and less restrictive intake system, and advanced water-to-air intercoolers that ensure optimal charge air temperatures for maximum combustion efficiency. Complementing these mechanical upgrades is the adoption of the Miller cycle combustion process. This innovative thermodynamic cycle allows the engine to operate with increased efficiency, particularly under high-load conditions, where Audi claims a reduction in fuel consumption of up to 20 percent. As is characteristic of the RS5 marque, the engine is paired with a robust eight-speed automatic transmission and Audi’s renowned Quattro all-wheel-drive system as standard equipment. The transmission and a sophisticated limited-slip differential work in concert to distribute torque between the front and rear axles, with a range that can vary from 70/30 to a rear-biased 15/85 split. The energy required to power the electric motor is supplied by a substantial battery with a total capacity of 25.9 kWh, of which 22.0 kWh is usable. This sizable battery pack enables the RS5 to achieve an impressive all-electric driving range of up to 54 miles in city driving conditions, according to Audi’s estimates. The vehicle’s electrical system operates on a 400-volt architecture, supporting a maximum AC charging speed of 11 kW, which allows for a full charge to be replenished in approximately 2.5 hours. Notably, Audi has eliminated the traditional 12-volt starter motor from the RS5, as the electric motor now performs this function, providing seamless and instant engine starts. To achieve peak performance from the powertrain and the advanced torque vectoring system, the RS5’s battery must be sufficiently charged. Specifically, Audi mandates that the battery be charged to at least 90 percent when the vehicle is operated in RS Sport or RS Torque Rear drive modes. While this requirement might seem like a compromise for a plug-in hybrid, the automaker has engineered the vehicle to preserve the battery charge when these performance-oriented drive modes are selected. To ensure optimal battery performance and longevity, a sophisticated thermal management system is employed. A network of pumps, fans, and heat exchangers works in concert to maintain the battery temperature at a precise 68 degrees Fahrenheit, regardless of ambient conditions or driving demands. Dynamic Torque Control: A Revolution in Handling The 2027 RS5’s battery powers more than just the electric motor; it also supplies up to 8 kW to a permanent-magnet synchronous motor integrated into the vehicle’s groundbreaking electro-mechanical torque-vectoring system. This innovative technology, dubbed Dynamic Torque Control by Audi, represents a significant advancement in vehicle dynamics. Unlike traditional torque-vectoring systems that rely on braking or mechanical differentials, the RS5’s system actively shuffles torque between the rear wheels using an advanced actuator, overdrive gears, and a differential.
