Porsche engineers have openly discussed the extensive modifications necessary to adapt Rivian’s innovative architecture to function harmoniously with an internal combustion engine, a testament to the intricate nature of such integrations. Beyond the powertrain intricacies, the fundamental design of the Scout Terra and Traveler presents another formidable engineering puzzle. The vehicles were initially conceived as pure EVs, with no provision for a conventional engine in the design blueprints. This singular focus meant that when the decision was made to incorporate a gasoline engine for the Harvester EREV models, engineers had to devise a creative solution for packaging this additional component. The chosen configuration places the four-cylinder engine horizontally beneath the rear cargo area of the pickup and the SUV’s rear deck.
