Full rescue here: T2710001_Dog rescued The Most Reliable Trucks: Ram and Toyota Take the Top Spots in 2026 General Motors trucks have fallen off from leading the large and midsize segments. By Billy Rehbock, Ryan Lugo, and J.D. Power Staff Most truck buyers want their vehicles to be eminently capable when it comes to towing and hauling, but they’d also like their rigs to last. To get a glimpse of what shoppers can expect from late-model trucks, we took a hard look at the J.D. Power U.S. Vehicle Dependability Study, which measures quality and reliability concerns reported by original vehicle owners. For the 2026 report, the firm’s analysts studied the responses from original owners of 2023 model year vehicles after three years of ownership. When it comes to trucks, the key findings for this year’s study include owner concerns about over-the-air software updates, phone integration, and electrified powertrains. With those trends in mind, these are the most reliable trucks according to the experts at J.D. Power. 2023 Ram 1500 Big Horn 8 The 2023 Ram 1500 is the highest-ranked full-size pickup truck on J.D. Power’s 2026 U.S. Vehicle Dependability Study. The latest-generation Ram 1500 was introduced for the 2019 model year and received its most recent refresh for 2025. We’ve been impressed with the Ram, as well, as the full-size pickup has won our Truck of the Year award for the 2019, 2021, and 2025 model years. Pros: The Ram 1500 is available with a wide range of powertrains, and we love the way it rides and handles. Lower-end models are well-suited for duty at a job site, but trims higher up the range are downright luxurious and loaded with technology. Then there’s the awesome TRX with its supercharged V-8 and off-road-ready upgrades. Great reliability is an added benefit to an already great truck. Cons: For all the Ram 1500’s positive attributes, the full-size pickup doesn’t get great fuel economy unless you go for the diesel engine. Towing and payload figures aren’t the best in the segment, either. When new, the Ram 1500’s price gets steep with options. Specs: Approximate Price: From $22,000 Safety Rating: 2022 Top Safety Pick (IIHS), four to five stars overall (NHTSA) Engines: 3.6-liter eTorque mild hybrid V-6, 3.0-liter turbodiesel V-6, 5.7-liter V-8 (optional eTorque mild hybrid tech), 6.2-liter supercharged V-8 (TRX) Fuel Economy: 10-21/14-29 mpg city/highway Read Our Experts’ Review of the 2023 Ram 1500 2023 Toyota Tacoma 2
Known for its sheer durability and rugged appeal, the previous-generation Toyota Tacoma is the most reliable midsize truck on J.D. Power’s 2026 U.S. Vehicle Dependability Study. The latest model arrived for 2024, but the previous iteration of the popular pickup was offered from 2016 to 2023. That means the example listed here is your last shot to get what could be an all-time great, at least as far as reliability is concerned. Pros: Amid midsize trucks, the Toyota Tacoma represents a strong value. Timeless styling, a wide variety of configurations, and a strong suite of driver assistance technology make it a compelling buy. TRD models have tremendous off-road capability and burly looks to match. Cons: The Tacoma lacks refinement to the point where it borders on feeling agricultural. Unless you get the TRD Pro equipped with the Fox Shocks, the ride is rough. The automatic transmission was dated when new, and the interior is cramped. Specs: Approximate Price: From $23,000 Safety Rating: Four stars overall (NHTSA) Engines: 2.7-liter I-4, 3.5-liter V-6 Fuel Economy: 17-20/20-23 mpg city/highway Read Our Experts’ Full Review of the 2023 Toyota Tacoma 2023 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 ZR2 AEV Bison 10 In the full-size truck segment, the Chevrolet Silverado 1500 trails only the Ram 1500 in the 2026 J.D. Power U.S. Vehicle Dependability Study. Chevy updated the Silverado 1500 in 2022, and the truck carried over into 2023 with minimal changes, though the diesel engine got more horsepower and torque. The Silverado ZR2 has serious off-road hardware for rock crawling. Pros: Chevy’s powertrains are strong and smooth, from the entry-level four-cylinder mill to the 420-hp V-8. A diesel option supplies torque and is remarkably efficient. Spacious bed options and useful features make the Silverado great to use on the daily. ZR2 models are a solid pick for those who love the outdoors. Cons: You won’t mistake this Chevy for a luxury vehicle. Its road manners are unrefined compared to its rivals, and the interior is underwhelming and dated. On the outside, there’s the grille, which some might find garish compared to other pickups on the market. Specs: Approximate Price: From $23,000 Safety Rating: Five stars overall (NHTSA) Engines: 2.7-liter turbo-four, 5.3-liter V-8, 6.2-liter V-8, 3.0-liter turbodiesel I-6
Fuel Economy: 14-24/17-29 mpg city/highway Read Our Experts’ Full Review of the 2023 Chevrolet Silverado 2023 Ford F 150 Tremor 57 The Ford F-150 has been the bestselling vehicle in the United States for nearly 50 years running, but it shares third place in the 2026 U.S. Vehicle Dependability Study with the GMC Sierra 1500. Its most recent incarnation arrived for the 2021 model year, and evolutionary updates were made for 2024 with more base power and bigger, better screens. The all-electric F-150 Lightning was also our 2023 Truck of the Year. Pros: The full-size Ford F-150 is immensely configurable and can be had with gas-only, hybrid, and all-electric powertrains. Regardless of how the F-150 is configured, it exhibits a refined ride empty or loaded. The cabin is spacious and packed with desirable features. Cons: As a bestseller, the F-150 doesn’t have to have radical styling to lure shoppers into the showroom, but we’d like to see Ford make a bolder statement. Although the F-150 is spacious and offers compelling tech, the interior materials underwhelm. Specs: Approximate Price: From $25,000 Safety Rating: 2022 Top Safety Pick (IIHS), five stars overall (NHTSA) Engines: 3.3-liter V-6, 2.7-liter twin-turbo V-6, 5.0-liter naturally aspirated V-8, 3.5-liter twin-turbo V-6, 3.5-liter twin-turbo V-6 hybrid, 5.2-liter supercharged V-8 Fuel Economy: 10-25/15-25 mpg city/highway, 66-40 mpg-e (F-150 Lightning) Read Our Experts’ Full Review of the 2023 Ford F-150 004 2023 GMC Sierra 1500 AT4X AEV front three quarters in action 2023 GMC Sierra 1500 Mechanically identical to the Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and primarily distinguished by nicer trim and materials, the GMC Sierra 1500 arrived in its current form for 2019. The GMC Sierra 1500 ties the Ford F-150 in J.D. Power’s 2026 U.S. Vehicle Dependability Study, trailing its cousin from Chevy. Most recently, the GMC Sierra 1500 received a face-lift for the 2022 model year. Pros: As is typical for the full-size pickup segment, the GMC Sierra 1500 is available with a wide range of powertrains. As a more premium pickup brand, GMC offers the ultra-luxe Denali Ultimate for those that spring for the top trim level. GM’s excellent Super Cruise hands-free driving is available to provide highway driving support.
Cons: Because the GMC Sierra is offered with luxury-focused trims, it gets quite expense at the top of the model range. Unlike many of its competitors, it isn’t offered
