Full rescue here: T0111002_Rescue Trapped Dog A few months back, I was pushing a Cadillac ATS-V hard through the winding canyons of Malibu, California, trying to keep pace with a BMW M3 and a Mercedes-AMG C63 S in a head-to-head comparison. While the twin-turbo V-6 monster was undeniably fun, I couldn’t shake the feeling that something crucial was missing: a V-8 rumble. It turns out the masterminds behind the sixth-generation 2016 Chevrolet Camaro SS were already thinking along the same lines. Built on the same lightweight Alpha platform architecture as the Cadillac ATS, but with the wheelbase stretched by 1.4 inches, the 2016 Camaro SS introduces the very element the ATS-V lacked. The outgoing Camaro’s LS3 V-8 has been retired, making way for the heart of the Corvette Stingray: the LT1 6.2-liter V-8, pumping out a formidable 455 horsepower and 455 pound-feet of torque. This represents a significant upgrade—an increase of 29 horsepower and 35 pound-feet—over its predecessor. Mating this magnificent V-8 to the rear wheels is a slick six-speed manual transmission, with a lightning-fast eight-speed automatic available as an option. When you combine this newfound power with a curb weight that’s 214 pounds lighter than the last Camaro SS we tested, the 2016 model rockets to some truly astonishing performance figures at the track. The 0-to-60 mph sprint is dispatched in a mere 4.0 seconds, and the quarter mile disappears in 12.4 seconds, crossing the line at 114.6 mph. These aren’t just impressive numbers; they eclipse the previous-generation Camaro SS 1LE we tested and even bring the mighty 505-hp, 7.0-liter V-8-powered Camaro Z/28 to the table for a serious challenge. For context, a 2015 Camaro SS 1LE required 4.4 seconds to reach 60 mph and 12.9 seconds for the quarter mile at 110.5 mph. The legendary Z/28 managed a 0-60 time of 4.0 seconds flat, finishing the quarter mile just a hair ahead of the 2016 Camaro SS in 12.3 seconds at 116.1 mph. But the 2016 Camaro SS isn’t just about straight-line speed; its braking performance is equally commendable, with the standard Brembo stoppers bringing the Chevy to a halt from 60 mph in just 104 feet.
Beyond its straight-line prowess, the 2016 Chevrolet Camaro SS proves it can hold its own through the corners, often keeping pace with the previous-generation Camaro Z/28. The Camaro SS navigated our figure-eight test in 24.1 seconds, averaging 0.85 g, while the older Z/28 completed the same course in 23.6 seconds at 0.89 g. Although the more race-focused Z/28 maintains a slight edge, it’s crucial to remember that this is the baseline V-8 model. Chevrolet has certainly left room for even more potent and track-honed Camaro variants in the future. Back on public roads, away from the scrutinizing eyes of the test track, the new Chevy Camaro SS drives remarkably like a lighter, more agile version of the Cadillac ATS-V. The LT1 V-8 delivers thrilling power across its entire rev range, accompanied by a soundtrack that demands attention. While the ATS-V’s 464-hp twin-turbo V-6 is a formidable engine, this V-8 is the powertrain the Cadillac truly deserves. The powerband is so exceptionally broad that shifting the Camaro becomes almost optional when you’re carving through canyon roads with intent. This is a shame, however, because the six-speed manual transmission is nothing short of spectacular. The shifter moves with a slick, precise action, and the pedals are perfectly positioned for textbook heel-toe downshifts. The ride and handling represent a monumental leap forward compared to the Camaro it replaces. The steering is sharp, possesses a satisfying weighting, and feels incredibly precise. While the car does exhibit a tendency to understeer at the limit, the Chevy eagerly breaks loose at the tail with a judicious tap of the throttle. Although GM’s advanced magnetic ride control dampers are available on the Camaro SS, our tester, a base-model Camaro 1SS, did not feature this option. Frankly, I’m not sure it’s needed; the standard steel springs kept the Camaro remarkably flat through corners while providing a very comfortable ride. The 2016 Chevrolet Camaro SS represents a significant achievement for Chevrolet, building upon the strengths of its predecessor while addressing its weaknesses. However, one burning question remains as we look toward the 2026 model year: How does this latest iteration stack up against its legendary archrival from Dearborn, Michigan—the 2026 Ford Mustang GT? This is a matchup that has captivated pony car enthusiasts for decades, and the latest iteration promises to be one of the most compelling chapters yet in this storied rivalry. While the Camaro has clearly closed the gap and, in many respects, surpassed the Mustang in terms of overall refinement and performance, the Mustang GT has consistently evolved to meet these challenges. The 2026 Mustang GT is expected to continue this tradition, likely featuring further refinements in chassis technology, powertrain innovation, and interior quality. The key question is whether the Mustang can reclaim the outright performance crown or if the Camaro’s momentum will carry it to a decisive victory in the eyes of critics and consumers alike. This is a rivalry that drives the entire segment forward, pushing both manufacturers to deliver their best work. As we approach the 2026 model year, the anticipation is palpable, and the performance metrics are poised to be closer than ever before. The modern American muscle car landscape of 2026 is a testament to the intense rivalry between Chevrolet and Ford, with both manufacturers pushing the boundaries of performance, technology, and driver engagement. The Chevrolet Camaro SS, with its roots tracing back to the original pony car era, has undergone a significant transformation in its latest iteration. Building on the success of the previous generation, the 2026 Camaro SS showcases a refined chassis, a more potent powertrain, and an interior that finally matches its exterior styling in terms of quality and design. This evolution is a direct response to the increasingly sophisticated demands of the modern performance car buyer, who expects not only raw power but also refinement, technology, and everyday drivability. The Camaro SS stands as a testament to Chevrolet’s commitment to delivering a world-class muscle car that can compete with the best from around the globe.
Underpinning the 2026 Camaro SS is a chassis that represents a significant departure from its predecessors. The Alpha platform, shared with Cadillac’s high-performance sedans, provides a stiff, lightweight foundation that allows the Camaro to handle with precision and agility that belies its size. This platform-sharing strategy has enabled Chevrolet to endow the Camaro with a level of handling prowess that was previously unthinkable for a muscle car. The suspension has been retuned to strike an optimal balance between track-day capability and on-road comfort, ensuring that the Camaro can tackle a winding canyon road with enthusiasm while still providing a comfortable ride for daily commuting. In 2026, this chassis technology continues to be a benchmark in the segment, providing a solid foundation for the Camaro’s impressive performance envelope. The heart of the 2026 Camaro SS remains its venerable V-8 engine, though it has been further refined to deliver even more power and efficiency. The LT1 6.2-liter V-8 continues to be the powerplant of choice, offering a compelling blend of raw power and tractable performance. In 2026, this engine likely benefits from advanced fuel-injection technology, improved thermal management, and revised engine mapping that further optimize its output and efficiency. The sound of the V-8 remains a defining characteristic of the Camaro experience, with a deep, resonant rumble that announces its presence and stirs the soul of any automotive enthusiast. This engine choice continues to differentiate the Camaro from its turbocharged rivals, appealing to buyers who crave the visceral experience of a naturally aspirated V-8. The availability of a manual transmission further enhances the driver-focused nature of the Camaro, providing a direct and engaging connection between the driver and the machine. The interior of the 2026 Camaro SS represents a significant departure from the previous generation, finally bringing the cabin up to the standard set by its exterior design and performance capabilities. Gone are the hard plastics and uninspired design elements of the past, replaced by high-quality materials, thoughtful design, and a focus on driver ergonomics. The instrument panel is driver-centric, with clear, legible gauges and a modern digital display that provides a wealth of information. The seats are supportive and comfortable, offering the perfect balance of bolstering for spirited driving and cushioning for long-distance cruising. The infotainment system is intuitive and responsive, with a large touchscreen display that provides access to navigation, audio, and vehicle settings. In 2026, these interior refinements continue to elevate the Camaro ownership experience, making it a car that is as pleasant to be in as it is thrilling to drive. The attention to detail in the interior is evident in every element, from the stitching on the seats to the soft-touch materials on the dashboard.
On the road, the 2026 Camaro SS delivers a driving experience that is both exhilarating and refined. The steering is precise and responsive, providing a clear sense of the front tires’
