Full story: T2306005_I BELIEVED IN YOU AGAIN AND YOU IN ME!! 2027 Chevrolet Corvette Grand Sport and Grand Sport X: A Deep Dive into America’s New Performance Icons The automotive landscape of 2027 is witnessing a seismic shift in the world of high-performance vehicles, and at the epicenter of this revolution sits the all-new Chevrolet Corvette Grand Sport and its electrified sibling, the Grand Sport X. For over a decade, the Grand Sport moniker has represented the quintessential blend of track-ready capability and everyday usability, a philosophy that continues to define these latest iterations. This year, however, the Corvette team hasn’t just refined the formula; they’ve reimagined it, introducing a new V-8 engine and a host of technological advancements that promise to set new benchmarks in the sports car segment. The Need for a New Breed of Corvette
The C8 generation of the Corvette has already pushed the boundaries of what’s possible in a mid-engine American sports car. With the introduction of the track-focused Z06, the hypercar-rivaling ZR1, and the mind-bending ZR1X with its staggering 1,250 horsepower, Chevrolet has established a new echelon of Corvette performance. Yet, amidst this pursuit of ultimate power, a segment of driving enthusiasts has been yearning for something different—a car that captures the raw essence of the Corvette experience without the stratospheric price tag or the extreme track demands of its more exotic brethren. Enter the 2027 Chevrolet Corvette Grand Sport. This new model is not merely a trim level; it’s a statement of intent. It represents Chevrolet’s commitment to the purist’s driving experience, offering a meticulously balanced package that prioritizes driver engagement, chassis dynamics, and accessible performance. The Grand Sport is designed to be the sweet spot in the Corvette lineup—a car that excels on the winding roads of the Tail of the Dragon and handles the daily commute with surprising civility. The Heart of the Beast: The New LS6 V-8 Engine The most significant development for the 2027 Corvette Grand Sport is the introduction of the new LS6 small-block V-8 engine. This marks the sixth generation of Chevy’s iconic small-block architecture, and it’s a masterpiece of modern engineering. While the Z06 and ZR1 continue to utilize the flat-plane crank LT6 engine, the Grand Sport embraces the traditional American V-8 philosophy: there’s no replacement for displacement. The LS6 takes the Corvette’s engine from 6.2 liters to a muscular 6.7 liters by increasing the stroke from 92mm to 100mm. This change in geometry, combined with a bore that remains consistent with the C8’s design language, unlocks a new level of torque. The result is a naturally aspirated V-8 that produces a formidable 535 horsepower and a staggering 520 lb-ft of torque. This represents a significant increase over the outgoing LT2 engine found in the Stingray, offering 40 more horsepower and 50 more lb-ft of torque. Perhaps more importantly, the torque curve of the LS6 is optimized for real-world driving. The peak torque arrives earlier in the rev range, at 4,600 rpm, providing a surge of power that’s immediately accessible when accelerating out of corners. This characteristic makes the Grand Sport feel more muscular and responsive than its predecessors, particularly on public roads where constant high-RPM driving is impractical. Engine Internals and Exhaust Notes To handle the increased stresses of the longer stroke and higher compression ratio (now 13.0:1 compared to the LT2’s 11.5:1), Chevrolet has equipped the LS6 with forged pistons and connecting rods. These robust internals not only enhance durability but also open the door for future aftermarket modifications, a nod to the Corvette’s strong tuning community. The addition of port fuel injection also addresses emissions regulations while maintaining the visceral character of a naturally aspirated engine. The auditory experience of the LS6 is nothing short of spectacular. Chevrolet is offering two distinct exhaust options for the Grand Sport. The standard system features quad tips split between the left and right sides of the car, providing a classic V-8 rumble. However, the optional center-exit exhaust is the one that commands attention. This system, which features all four tips grouped together in the center of the rear bumper, delivers a more aggressive, race-car-like exhaust note. While both systems feature active valves to control the sound, the engineers at Corvette Racing confirmed that the center-exit exhaust offers a noticeably different and more visceral auditory experience—a must-have for any driving enthusiast seeking the ultimate Corvette soundtrack. chassis and Suspension: A Tale of Three Personalities The Grand Sport inherits the wide-body architecture of the Z06, giving it a more aggressive stance and improved aerodynamic stability. This wider track allows for the fitment of larger wheels and tires, enhancing grip and cornering capabilities. The suspension system is where the Grand Sport truly differentiates itself, offering a level of customization rarely seen in production sports cars. Buyers can choose from three distinct chassis setups, each tailored to a specific driving environment. The standard setup is the Touring suspension, which is paired with Michelin Pilot Sport All Season tires. This configuration provides a comfortable ride that’s suitable for daily driving, yet still offers a significant upgrade in handling over the base Stingray.
For those who plan to venture onto the track, the Sport Performance package is the ideal choice. This package features a stiffer suspension tune and upgrades to the braking system. The Grand Sport comes standard with MagneRide adaptive dampers, but the Sport Performance package enhances this technology for a more aggressive response. Furthermore, this package includes the J56 brakes from the Z06, which utilize a high-temperature ferritic nitro carburizing treatment to improve corrosion resistance and braking performance. The tires for this package are Michelin Pilot Sport 4S summer tires, providing exceptional grip in warm conditions. The pinnacle of the Grand Sport’s performance offerings is the Track Performance package. This option mirrors the Z06’s Z07 package, providing everything needed for serious track days. It includes Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 R tires, which are semi-slick racing tires designed for maximum grip. The brakes are upgraded to carbon-ceramic units, offering superior fade resistance and lighter weight. Aerodynamic enhancements include a carbon-fiber rear wing and dive planes, which generate significant downforce to keep the car planted at high speeds. The suspension is also uniquely tuned for track use, providing the most aggressive handling characteristics available. The Wheels of Fortune The wheels on the 2027 Corvette Grand Sport play a crucial role in both its aesthetics and performance. The car comes standard with 19-inch front and 20-inch rear forged wheels, which are offered in four different finishes. Forged wheels are prized in the automotive world for their strength-to-weight ratio, providing a perfect balance of durability and low unsprung mass. Complementing the forged wheels, carbon-fiber wheel options are available for Grand Sports equipped with the carbon-ceramic brakes. These wheels further reduce weight and rotational inertia, allowing the car to accelerate faster, brake harder, and change direction more eagerly. The choice of wheels, like the suspension, allows buyers to tailor their Grand Sport to their specific needs and desires. The Grand Sport X: Electrifying the Experience While the standard Grand Sport pays homage to the traditional Corvette ethos, the Grand Sport X takes a bold step into the future. This model builds upon the Grand Sport’s formidable foundation by incorporating the electrification technology first seen in the Corvette E-Ray. The Grand Sport X transforms the rear-drive Grand Sport into an all-wheel-drive hybrid powerhouse. At the heart of the Grand Sport X is the same 6.7-liter LS6 V-8 engine found in the standard Grand Sport, producing 535 horsepower. However, Chevrolet adds a 186-horsepower electric motor to the front axle and a 1.9-kWh lithium-ion battery pack that runs through the tunnel between the driver and passenger. This combination of internal combustion and electric power results in a total system output of 721 horsepower and 733 lb-ft of torque. This makes the Grand Sport X 66 horsepower more powerful than the Corvette E-Ray it replaces. The addition of the electric motor to the front wheels provides instant torque and the capability for all-wheel-drive traction, ensuring that every ounce of power is put to the pavement effectively. Chevrolet is projecting 0-60 mph times in the low two-second range, with quarter-mile runs expected to dip into the low 10-second bracket. The electric drive system in the Grand Sport X also enables several advanced features. Like the E-Ray, the Grand Sport X offers “stealth” electric driving at low speeds, allowing for quiet operation in residential areas. The all-wheel-drive system provides enhanced stability in all weather conditions, making the Grand Sport X a year-round performer. AWD Dynamics and Chassis Setup The Grand Sport X benefits from the same wide-body architecture as the standard Grand Sport, but its suspension setup is tailored to handle the additional power and weight of the hybrid system. Chevrolet will offer two suspension options for the X: a standard touring setup on all-season tires and a Performance suspension tune with summer tires.
However, unlike the standard Grand Sport, the Grand Sport X does not offer a Track package or a carbon-fiber aero kit. This decision was made to maintain the car’s unique character and to avoid diluting its performance credentials. When asked about the possibility of a track-focused Grand Sport X in the future, Chevrolet executive chief engineer Tony Roma simply smiled and told us to “stay tuned.” This cryptic response suggests that there may be more performance variants of the
