Even after the groundbreaking introduction of the 8,600-rpm Z06, the 1,064-hp ZR1, and the hypercar-slaying 1,250-hp ZR1X, the brilliance and passion behind America’s iconic sports car continue to drive innovation. As deliveries of the ZR1X begin to roll out, Chevrolet is proud to announce two new additions to the 2027 Corvette lineup: the Grand Sport and the Grand Sport X. These models promise to deliver a refined blend of performance and value, offering a compelling package that sits perfectly between the Stingray and the track-focused Z06. At the heart of these new Corvettes lies a brand-new engine that marks a significant milestone in the Corvette’s storied history. The 2027 Grand Sport and Grand Sport X debut the all-new LS6 small-block V-8, a 6.7-liter naturally aspirated powerhouse that produces an impressive 535 horsepower. This engine, combined with go-fast parts derived from the Z06, creates a driving experience that is both thrilling and accessible. For enthusiasts seeking an even more electrifying performance, the Grand Sport X introduces an all-wheel-drive hybrid system, borrowing technology from the ZR1X to deliver breathtaking acceleration and handling. A Winning Formula Reimagined The Grand Sport has long held a special place in the hearts of Corvette aficionados, representing the perfect synthesis of on-road refinement and track-ready capability. The 2027 iteration honors this tradition by combining the Stingray’s new 6.7-liter V-8 with the Z06’s wider body and several of its performance-enhancing features. This proven formula has delivered exceptional results in the past, and based on the stellar performance of every C8 Corvette variant, we have every reason to believe the Grand Sport will set a new benchmark for sports car excellence. The first-ever Grand Sport X takes this concept to the next level, leveraging the same engineering principles and componentry that power the formidable ZR1X. By integrating a 186-hp electric motor at the front and a 1.9-kWh lithium-ion battery, Chevrolet transforms the rear-drive Grand Sport into an all-wheel-drive hybrid. This innovative powertrain combines the 535-hp gas engine with electric boost to produce a staggering 721 horsepower, a significant 66-hp increase over the outgoing E-Ray. We predict that the Grand Sport X will achieve 0-60 mph times in the low two-second range, with quarter-mile runs in the low 10s, placing it firmly in the realm of hypercar performance. The Evolution of the Small-Block V-8 The introduction of the LS6 engine marks a pivotal moment for Chevrolet’s legendary small-block V-8 family. Named in homage to the high-performance variants of the Mark IV small-block that debuted in 1970, the LS6 represents the sixth generation of this iconic engine architecture. To achieve its impressive power output, Chevrolet engineers have increased the displacement from 6.2 liters to 6.7 liters by lengthening the stroke from 92 millimeters to 100 millimeters. While the bore remains unchanged, the expanded stroke allows for greater torque generation, with the LS6 producing an additional 40 horsepower and 50 lb-ft of torque compared to the Stingray’s LT2 engine. This results in a peak torque of 520 lb-ft arriving earlier in the rev range at 4,600 rpm, providing exhilarating off-the-line acceleration. To handle the increased stresses of the larger displacement and higher performance, the pistons and connecting rods in the LS6 are now forged, offering enhanced durability and reliability. This upgrade will also be appreciated by performance enthusiasts who seek to extract even more power from this already potent powerplant. The engine’s combustion process has been refined with the addition of port fuel injection, which helps to reduce particulate emissions and improve overall efficiency.
The auditory experience of the LS6 is nothing short of spectacular. At startup, the engine emits a deep, commanding bark, which transitions into a rich burble at idle. As the revs climb, the exhaust note escalates into a feral snarl that perfectly complements the car’s sporting character. Chevrolet offers two exhaust configurations for the LS6. The standard system features four exhaust tips split between the left and right sides of the car, while the optional performance exhaust consolidates all four tips in the center. Both systems incorporate active valves to control the engine note and volume, though engineers note a distinct difference in their sound profiles. While both configurations deliver the same power output, the center-exit exhaust provides a more visceral and aggressive auditory experience that we highly recommend. Tailored Performance for Every Driver The 2027 Corvette Grand Sport and Grand Sport X will be available in two distinct body styles: a traditional targa-topped “coupe” and a retractable hardtop convertible. Both models come standard with MagneRide dampers and an electronically controlled limited-slip differential, ensuring optimal handling and traction in all driving conditions. Power is delivered through the Tremec eight-speed dual-clutch transmission, which has been optimized with a new 5.56:1 final drive ratio. This more aggressive gearing enhances acceleration at the expense of fuel economy, a trade-off that performance enthusiasts will readily embrace. This updated final drive ratio will also be available on the 2027 Stingray with the optional Z51 package, which previously utilized a 5.13:1 ratio. The rear-wheel-drive Grand Sport offers three distinct chassis configurations to suit varying driving preferences. The standard touring setup provides the softest ride, paired with Michelin Pilot Sport All Season tires for comfortable daily driving. For those seeking a more engaging experience, the Sport Performance package features a stiffer suspension, Michelin Pilot Sport 4S summer tires, and the Z06’s J56 brakes, enhanced with a high-temperature ferritic nitro carburizing treatment for improved corrosion resistance. The Track Performance package, inspired by the Z06’s Z07 upgrade, delivers the ultimate track-focused experience with Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 R tires, carbon-ceramic brakes, a carbon-fiber wing and dive planes, a unique chassis tune, and the center-exit exhaust. The standard forged wheels come in four different finishes, with carbon-fiber wheels available as an option on cars equipped with carbon-ceramic brakes. The Grand Sport X elevates the performance equation with carbon-ceramic brakes as standard equipment, providing exceptional stopping power to match its formidable acceleration. Chevrolet will offer two suspension configurations for the X: a comfortable touring setup with all-season tires and a sport-tuned suspension with summer tires. Notably, there is no track package or carbon-fiber aero kit for the X, a decision that Chevy’s executive chief engineer, Tony Roma, cryptically suggests warrants further attention. All Grand Sport models proudly display the iconic hash stripes on the fenders, a nod to their heritage, now positioned at the rear of the car. The Perfect Balance of Performance and Value The 2027 Corvette Grand Sport and Grand Sport X are set to hit dealerships this summer, with the Grand Sport X following in the fall. To commemorate the launch of these exciting new models, Chevrolet will offer a Launch Edition for the initial model year. This special edition will feature a striking blue-dipped leather interior with vibrant red stitching and accents, creating a visually stunning and highly desirable collector’s item. While official pricing has not yet been announced, Roma has confirmed that the Grand Sport will start under $100,000, making it an exceptional value proposition in the sports car market. This positions the Grand Sport as the perfect entry point into the higher-performance tiers of the Corvette lineup, offering a taste of the Z06 and ZR1 experience at a more attainable price point.
Based on the proven capabilities of the C8 Corvette platform and the performance characteristics of its predecessors, we have a clear understanding of where the Grand Sport will land in terms of pricing, performance, and overall positioning. The driving dynamics are expected to strike the ideal balance between track prowess and road comfort, making it a truly versatile sports car. The Corvette Grand Sport and Grand Sport X represent the sweet spot in the Corvette lineup, offering the most special attributes of the Z06, ZR1, and ZR1X without the premium price tag of those limited-production models. For enthusiasts seeking the ultimate Corvette experience, the Grand Sport and Grand Sport X deliver an unparalleled combination of performance, refinement, and value that is simply unmatched in today’s market.
