When the 2025 BMW M2 first rolled into our long-term fleet, we approached it with a healthy dose of skepticism. Built from a combination of BMW parts bin components, it seemed destined to be an enthusiasts-only oddity rather than a true daily driver. However, the M2 quickly shattered those expectations. It delivered such visceral thrills and punched so far above its weight that it ultimately earned our Performance Vehicle of the Year award, outcompeting heavy hitters from Lamborghini, Porsche, and Ferrari.
Yet, a yearlong test presents a different challenge than a weekend track excursion. The M2 would face the mundane realities of daily life—pointless commutes, grocery runs, doctor’s appointments, and even a cross-country road trip. What We Got and What We Did With Our M2

The trunk, though not cavernous, swallowed enough luggage for a week-long road trip or multiple bags of groceries. This versatility is what truly sets the M2 apart in the performance car segment.

We also grew to appreciate BMW’s digital ecosystem. The infotainment system provided fun Easter eggs on holidays, adding a touch of personality to the driving experience. The BMW mobile app proved surprisingly useful, allowing us to check fuel levels, tire pressure, and even schedule service appointments remotely. This seamless integration of technology enhances the ownership experience without feeling intrusive.
Minor Gripes and Maintenance
No car is perfect, and the M2 had a few minor annoyances. Storage space up front for essentials like keys, wallets, and water bottles was limited. This is both better and cheaper than we anticipated, especially considering the hard driving the car endured. For perspective, our less powerful, front-wheel-drive Integra Type S is currently averaging 23.3 mpg, while our 2017 M2 (which was theoretically more efficient) only managed 20.9 mpg.
