For 12 months and over 17,000 miles, this compact powerhouse navigated the mundane and the magnificent, proving itself as a contender for the coveted one-car-solution crown.

The journey began with a healthy dose of skepticism. The M2, born from a seemingly haphazard collection of BMW parts, had already exceeded expectations. It delivered a driving experience so visceral and exhilarating that it triumphed over established titans from Lamborghini, Porsche, and Ferrari at our 2025 Performance Vehicle of the Year competition. Yet, the true measure of a car extends far beyond track days and canyon carving.
The Daily Grind: More Than Just Speed
A yearlong test throws a different kind of gauntlet. The daily grind—pointless commutes for mediocre coffee, weekend errands, doctor’s appointments, and those impulse Facebook Marketplace buys that look smaller in person—tests a car’s mettle in ways a track cannot. These aren’t the environments where sports cars typically shine. However, over 14 months and 17,042 miles, our 2025 BMW M2 proved that perhaps the perfect daily driver doesn’t require a compromise on driving pleasure.
What We Got and What We Did
One of the M2’s strengths lies in its factory-standard equipment. Unlike some manufacturers who leave performance essentials as costly options, BMW equips every M2 with a formidable arsenal. Under the hood lies a potent 3.0-liter twin-turbo inline-six, churning out 473 horsepower and 406 lb-ft of torque (or 443 lb-ft with the automatic). Power is sent to the rear wheels through a slick six-speed manual transmission and an electronically controlled limited-slip differential. Stopping power comes courtesy of massive six-piston 15.0-inch front and 14.6-inch floating Brembo brakes, all managed by an adaptive suspension system and remarkably transparent software.
Despite the generous standard kit, temptation proved too strong. We opted for the alluring Twilight Metallic Purple paint, a carbon-fiber roof for that classic M-car aesthetic, and functional upgrades including a head-up display, adaptive LED lights, heated steering wheel, parking sensors, and a wireless phone charger. The M Driver’s Package added a higher top speed and entry to the exclusive M Performance driving school. The base price hovered around $66,075, with our extras pushing the total to $77,325. For the 2026 model year, an identical configuration would set buyers back $81,600.
This configuration, it turned out, was all the car we needed.

Pros and Cons: A Year in the Life
Throughout its tenure, the 2025 M2 demonstrated an uncanny ability to read the room. On long road trips, it settled into a comfortable, calm cruise, effortlessly dispatching miles without needing to drop below sixth gear. Around town, its compact dimensions made parking a breeze, yet it consistently accommodated our editors and their cargo—from beer-league hockey bags to those oversized Super Bowl TV purchases.
And on a winding back road? Forget about it. The M2 transforms into a scalpel-sharp, visceral machine. We found ourselves actively seeking out “curves ahead” signs, eager to exploit the M2’s potent inline-six, impeccable balance, and pinpoint-precise brakes.
Beyond the driving dynamics, the Twilight Purple paint remained a showstopper. It was a constant conversation starter, turning heads on every outing. We were also pleasantly surprised by the BMW digital ecosystem. Holiday periods brought fun Easter eggs to the infotainment system, while the BMW mobile app proved genuinely useful for checking fuel levels, tire pressure, and even scheduling service appointments.

However, the M2 wasn’t without its minor quirks. Front storage for essentials like keys, wallets, and water bottles was surprisingly limited, forcing us to get creative—stuffing water bottles between the seat bolster and door, or wedging charging phones in the tight gap between the inboard bolster and central tunnel. This was particularly necessary on longer trips, as the wireless phone charger in the center console had a tendency to overheat phones after extended use. The other persistent annoyance was the high-performance brake pads, which emitted a rather loud squeal when dirty. We developed a routine of running the car through a car wash on longer journeys to mitigate this.
Toward the end of our loan period, intermittent “Emergency call system malfunction” warnings appeared on the instrument cluster. A visit to our local BMW dealer diagnosed the issue as a faulty telematics control unit. Once the part arrived, the repair was completed under warranty.
Ownership Costs: A Surprising Bargain?
Speaking of dealer visits, the maintenance costs for our M2 were surprisingly reasonable. Aside from the telematics unit, the car required just three scheduled service stops: a break-in service at 1,200 miles and two subsequent oil changes. These visits were prompt, painless, and most importantly, free.
The only out-of-pocket expense came at around 15,000 miles when we replaced the tires, incurring a $2,390.66 bill for a new set of Michelins and a necessary alignment. This is admittedly higher than the last M2 (a 2017 model) we kept long-term, which cost us an inflation-adjusted $1,452.44 for tires. But as everyone knows, inflation has made its mark on automotive pricing.
When compared to other high-performance vehicles of similar caliber in our fleet, the M2 shines. Our current Acura Integra Type S has yet to incur any service or maintenance costs, and according to Tire Rack, a new set of tires would run approximately $1,576 before mounting and balancing.
Efficiency: Beating Expectations
The M2’s fuel efficiency was another pleasant surprise. Rated by the EPA at 16 mpg city, 23 mpg highway, and 19 mpg combined, the car consistently delivered around 21.9 mpg over the year. This figure, translating to roughly $0.24 per mile, was significantly better than we anticipated, especially given the spirited driving our test car endured. It’s not far off the 23.3 mpg we’re currently averaging in our less powerful, front-wheel-drive Integra Type S, and it even surpasses the 20.9 mpg we achieved in our 2017 M2, which was theoretically a more efficient car.

The Ultimate One-Car Solution?
We began our year with the BMW M2 wondering if we’d have to eat our words after dubbing this Bimmer a “no-compromises” sports car. As our time with the car drew to a close, the answer became abundantly clear: we were right. No matter what we threw at the M2, it excelled. While its exceptional road manners never surprised us, its practicality, efficiency, and style continually did. The M2 proved that you don’t have to sacrifice daily usability for the thrill of driving.
So compelling was the M2 that multiple editors contemplated purchasing it once the loan period ended. Ultimately, no one in the office pulled the trigger—but only because one editor’s sibling beat them to the punch, acquiring our well-cared-for M2 for $66,300. While we’re sad to see it go, we take comfort in knowing the M2 remains in the extended family, ready for future adventures.
