Full story here: T1408014_Heroes Use Digger to Save Cow Trapped in Thick Mud The 1,064-HP 2026 Chevrolet Corvette ZR1: A 335-Mile, 10-Hour Odyssey Through Los Angeles The highly anticipated Corvette ZR1 effortlessly rockets to 60 mph in 2.5 seconds, but how long does it truly take to conquer the sprawling landscape of Los Angeles? By Christian Seabaugh, with photography by Brandon Lim Published: February 13, 2026 For a significant portion of my adolescence, I found myself captivated by the allure of unofficial, unsanctioned speed records. This fascination likely traces its roots to a late-night viewing of Jackass’ Gumball 3000 Rally coverage, which chronicled a chaotic journey from London to St. Petersburg and back in a battered Jaguar. The spectacle ignited a spark, leading me down a rabbit hole that deepened upon discovering the legendary Cannonball Run and its various successors. The Cannonball Run, conceived in the 1970s by the inimitable automotive journalist Brock Yates, was born as a form of protest against the restrictive 55-mph national speed limit. This epic New York City–Los Angeles challenge represented the zenith of automotive endurance and audacity. In 2006, my already fervent interest intensified when I learned that a long-standing record had finally fallen. An eccentric enthusiast, piloting a fifth-generation BMW M5, had slashed the transcontinental travel time to an astonishing 31 hours and 4 minutes. Closer to my Brooklyn roots, that same driver had honed his skills by completing what was termed “lapping” Manhattan in a mere 27 minutes—a feat that seemed almost incomprehensible at the time. As a younger, decidedly more reckless version of myself, my friends and I harbored a collective fantasy of conquering that very challenge. By the time we possessed the financial means to embark on such an endeavor, our self-preservation instincts had long since prevailed. Nevertheless, the allure of local, unofficial records persisted in my mind. What was the fastest known circumnavigation of Washington, D.C.’s Beltway, Berlin’s Stadtring, or Moscow’s ring road? This line of inquiry eventually led me to contemplate my adopted hometown: Los Angeles.
The Challenge: Defining the Ultimate Automotive Playground Los Angeles, often lauded as the spiritual capital of American car culture, presents a uniquely complex subject when attempting to define its boundaries or its definitive driving circuit. The name “Los Angeles” commands attention in both local and national conversations, yet it functions primarily as the largest of 88 distinct cities within the sprawling expanse of Los Angeles County. This colossal territory, comparable in size to the state of Connecticut, is geographically constrained by the Pacific Ocean to its west and south, where the majority of its population resides. Its waist is bisected by formidable mountain ranges and verdant forests, while its northern reaches give way to high deserts. For those who call this region home, the concept of “real” L.A. is as subjective as the definition of “upstate” in New York. The generally accepted answer to the latter is, of course, “everything north of the Bronx.” Similarly, “L.A.” encompasses a dizzying mosaic of environments: the sun-drenched bungalows of beachside communities, the glittering neon of Hollywood’s Sunset Strip, and the seemingly eternal congestion of its freeway network. Yet, it also includes the serpentine embrace of canyon roads, the arrow-straight expanses of desert highways, and the iconic grandeur of its legendary boulevards. The prospect of piecing together a comprehensive lap of these diverse driving environments into a single, cohesive journey presented an enticing and enigmatic challenge. However, unlike a circuit of Washington, D.C., or a lap of Manhattan, traversing the entirety of this state-sized county would be as much a test of endurance as it would be of outright speed. The 2026 Chevrolet Corvette ZR1, therefore, emerged as the quintessential candidate for this ambitious undertaking. Building upon the formidable foundation of the MotorTrend-award-winning Corvette Z06—a vehicle itself engineered to dominate endurance racing in its GT3.R iteration—the new ZR1 represents the absolute zenith of gasoline-powered American performance. Its most significant technical innovation lies beneath the skin, specifically in the engine bay. The high-revving, flat-plane-crank 5.5-liter V-8 engine is a derivative of the Z06’s power unit, significantly augmented with twin turbochargers. These forced induction units are capable of compressing and forcing so much air into the combustion chambers that they generate an astonishing 37 pounds of boost, propelling exhaust gases out of the tailpipes with ferocious velocity. The culmination of this engineering effort is a staggering output of 1,064 horsepower and 828 pound-feet of torque. This immense power is effectively managed by a pair of steamroller-wide Michelin tires, distributing the torque through an eight-speed automatic transaxle. Opting for the ZTK package further enhances the ZR1’s capabilities, introducing stiffer suspension springs, refined MagneRide dampers, enlarged carbon-ceramic brakes, and aggressive aerodynamic elements including dive planes and a prominent rear spoiler. While these aerodynamic additions can theoretically generate up to 1,200 pounds of downforce, this figure is only achievable at the car’s theoretical top speed of 233 mph, rendering it, in practical terms, little more than a boastful statistic. Nevertheless, the sheer level of race-bred technology trickling down into the production ZR1 makes it an undeniable choice for the grand Los Angeles challenge. The Route: A 335-Mile Tapestry of Southern California Our meticulously planned “Lap of Los Angeles” route was designed to trace the very borders of Los Angeles County. The journey commences at the historic Point Fermin Lighthouse in San Pedro, marking the southernmost extremity of mainland L.A. From this coastal starting point, the route veers eastward, traversing the city of Long Beach before ascending into the San Gabriel Mountains via the legendary Angeles Crest Highway. Upon descending from the mountains, the course enters Antelope Valley, crosses the high desert, and proceeds to the county’s northernmost boundary. The return leg then heads southwest, utilizing a series of winding canyon roads before an unavoidable transition onto major freeways and surface streets. This segment is necessary to connect with the famously sinuous and engaging Mulholland Highway, which snakes through the Malibu hills. The final leg of the journey closely follows the Pacific coastline southward, eventually looping around the Palos Verdes Peninsula and returning to the vicinity of Point Fermin, completing the circuit.
To amplify the challenge for both the Corvette and myself—and conversely, to simplify logistics for our photography team—we made the strategic decision to undertake this extensive drive during daylight hours. The objective was to commence shortly after sunrise during the late winter and endeavor to cross the finish line before sunset. After all, what is a truly representative Los Angeles drive without a healthy dose of its infamous traffic? The Predicament: Navigating San Pedro in the Pre-Dawn Murk The Corvette rumbled to a halt at the designated starting line well before the sun had graced the horizon. The 2026 Chevrolet Corvette ZR1, a machine of visceral intent, seemed almost incongruous against the backdrop of the Victorian-era Point Fermin Lighthouse. This navigational aid, by design, should have been easily visible. However, the fog was so dense that its beam was completely obscured. The prevailing atmospheric conditions were so thick that I could discern the intricate workings of the ZR1’s aerodynamics as the air currents interacted with the carbon fiber lip of the front trunk’s radiator outlet and sculpted the car’s broad haunches. The profound lack of forward visibility rendered the navigation of San Pedro’s narrow, undulating streets a precarious affair. Furthermore, it complicated the task of distinguishing between the nascent glow of dawn emanating from the harbor to the east and the ambient light levels. We’re Off and Running: A False Start on the Vincent Thomas Bridge By approximately 6:24 a.m., the sun had managed to pierce through the marine layer, casting a tentative golden hue upon the landscape. At this point, I deemed the conditions sufficiently adequate to proceed. With a surge of anticipation, I pointed the ZR1 northward, my immediate objective being to execute a right turn onto the iconic Vincent Thomas Bridge and traverse Terminal Island en route to Long Beach. From there, the plan was to cut through the sprawling city to bypass the Orange County border and merge onto the 605 freeway. Disaster, however, struck with remarkable swiftness. An early-morning traffic incident had necessitated the closure of the Vincent Thomas Bridge, effectively funneling the early-morning contingent of tractor-trailers servicing the port and the ZR1 onto the 110 freeway, diverting us from our intended path. To compound the unfolding frustration, my mobile navigation application chose this inopportune moment to crash, forcing a reluctant return to my own unreliable memory as I attempted to reorient myself. Knowing that I needed to return to Terminal Island to rejoin the prescribed route, I veered off the freeway into the burgeoning morning traffic of Wilmington. I then attempted to navigate the congested thoroughfares, making my way down Pacific Coast Highway to Henry Ford Avenue. This street, along with others such as Firestone, Nash, and Studebaker, serves as a tangible relic of Los Angeles’s golden era as a hub of automotive manufacturing. The road led me past former industrial grounds where Ford Model A’s were once assembled and under a bridge that still proudly bears the Ford family name, before finally reconnecting me with Terminal Island.
It was at this juncture that I committed my second significant navigational error. With the soupy fog appearing to thicken as it neared the water’s edge
