Closer to home, in the vibrant borough of Brooklyn where I grew up, the same driver had honed his skills by “lapping” Manhattan in a mere 27 minutes—a feat that seemed almost incomprehensible to my teenage brain. As a younger and decidedly more foolish version of myself, my friends and I often fantasized about conquering such a record. By the time we might have possessed the financial means to embark on such an ambitious undertaking, the instinct for self-preservation had firmly taken root.

However, unlike a straightforward lap of the D.C. Beltway or the relatively contained circuit of Manhattan, the act of circumnavigating this state-sized county would prove to be as much a test of sheer endurance as it would be a measure of raw speed. It would demand not only velocity but also resilience against the clock and the elements.

The Victorian-era Point Fermin Lighthouse, ironically designed to be easily visible, was swallowed whole by a dense, soupy fog.
