Japanese companies may have been more reserved in their foray into electric vehicles, but that did not make them immune as every carmaker invested in EV development and tooled up plants to make them. With each new earnings call, we are learning how much it is costing automakers to scale back or delay EV programs. Like many other automakers, Honda has scrapped some EV plans that had been in the works, forcing write-offs for the expenditures incurred as part of the development. Increased incentives and more fleet sales—two areas Honda traditionally shies away from compared with the competition—are necessary after reporting that its bet on EVs has cost it $1.71 billion in the nine months ending December 31 and could total $1.86 billion for the full fiscal year that ends in March. Honda reported an operating loss of $1.07 billion for the first three quarters. For the full fiscal year, Honda expects EV losses to grow to $4.48 billion. ADVERTISEMENT – CONTINUE READING BELOW Acura ZDX Costly For Many Automakers For comparison, GM has had to write down about $7.6 billion, Ford is taking $19.5 billion in charges related to strategy changes and an overhaul of its EV business, and Stellantis has taken the biggest hit, writing down $26 billion after cutting back its EV plans. Honda’s global EV sales dropped to 15,000 in the final quarter of 2025. In the U.S., Honda Prologue sales were down 86 percent at the end of 2025. Incentives and fleet volume are needed to boost sales. They were jointly developed by the two companies and assembled by GM. The cooperative effort between the two companies is winding down. A revised product strategy for the next fiscal year that starts April 1 will focus on hybrids. Honda has new powertrains coming and wants to double hybrid sales to 2.2 million vehicles globally in 2030.
