The 2026 Hyundai Ioniq 5, the first all-electric vehicle to earn our prestigious SUV of the Year award, represents a paradigm shift in what an SUV can be. The Ioniq 5 strikes a perfect balance between approachability and innovation. Its design and controls will feel familiar to anyone transitioning from a traditional gasoline-powered SUV or crossover to their first electric vehicle. However, its exceptional packaging and performance are made possible only through the integration of small, energy-dense electric motors. Furthermore, the Ioniq 5 features cutting-edge 800-volt electric architecture, placing it among the fastest-charging EVs on the market—rivaling the convenience of traditional fuel stops. Starting at just over $40,000, it remains the most affordable vehicle to offer such advanced technology. In essence, no SUV in our highly competitive field of 33 contenders more comprehensively satisfies our six core SUV of the Year criteria than the 2026 Hyundai Ioniq 5.
Advancement in Design
Admittedly, the Ioniq 5’s exterior styling might challenge some conventional notions of an SUV. With its steeply raked tailgate, lack of a visible D-pillar, and a modest 6.1 inches of ground clearance—barely exceeding that of a Subaru Legacy sedan—the Hyundai’s silhouette leans more toward a midsize hatchback than a traditional compact SUV. Nevertheless, the Ioniq 5 stands out as one of the most visually striking mainstream vehicles to debut in recent years. Drawing inspiration from the Giugiaro-designed Hyundai Pony concept of decades past, the Ioniq 5 masterfully blends 8-bit retrofuturism with sharp, defined edges and distinctive lighting signatures. This aesthetic expertly taps into the nostalgia of Gen X and Gen Y demographics, creating an immediate emotional connection with viewers.
Digital director Erik Johnson expressed his admiration for the Ioniq 5’s design, noting, “I absolutely love the interior and exterior styling. It’s like a Trapper Keeper with Max Headroom on its cover I might have carried to elementary school, but on wheels.” Associate editor Duncan Brady echoed this sentiment, highlighting specific design elements: “I want to call special attention to the hash marks along the wheel arches, and of course those super-rad wheels.”
The interior design is equally successful, even if some judges wished the design team had extended the same level of playful creativity to the cabin as they did to the exterior. A pair of 12.3-inch displays dominate the dashboard, complemented by a minimalist, brandless two-spoke steering wheel. The control scheme thoughtfully integrates a mix of physical buttons, knobs, and switches, striking a delicate balance between modernity and familiarity. Head of editorial Ed Loh praised this approach: “Hyundai really sweated the details and smoothed out the user experience. This is a great transitional EV, new yet familiar. There’s a push-button start as most people understand and lots of physical knobs for putting it into gear and adjusting things with positive response by feel. There’s no capacitive guessing or checking some screen with your eyes to confirm your input. It’s simple and elegant, which is deceptively difficult to achieve.”
Engineering Excellence
Beneath its stylish exterior lies Hyundai Motor Group’s state-of-the-art E-GMP (Electric Global Modular Platform) architecture. This innovative platform also underpins the Kia EV6 (a finalist for SUV of the Year) and the Genesis GV60, as well as future vehicles in the Ioniq family. The remarkable versatility of the E-GMP architecture allowed Hyundai Motor Group’s three distinct brands to engineer three radically different electric SUVs, each featuring unique wheelbases and structural hardpoints, while sharing the same core battery and motor technologies. This approach empowers consumers with greater choice and provides access to advanced technologies at more competitive price points.
Hyundai offers the Ioniq 5 in two distinct battery and motor configurations to cater to diverse driving needs. The entry-level Ioniq 5 SE Standard Range model comes equipped with a 58.0-kWh battery pack paired with a single, rear-mounted electric motor, delivering 168 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque. This configuration achieves an EPA-estimated range of 220 miles. Opting for the larger 77.4-kWh battery pack unlocks enhanced performance and range. Rear-wheel-drive versions with the big battery produce an upgraded 225 horsepower while maintaining 258 lb-ft of torque. For those seeking maximum power, the optional dual-motor all-wheel-drive variants deliver a formidable 320 horsepower and 446 lb-ft of torque. All-wheel-drive Ioniq 5 models can travel up to 256 miles on a single charge (an improvement to 266 miles for the 2026 model year), while the single-motor variant achieves an impressive 303 miles between charges.
Even more compelling than its range is the Ioniq 5’s charging capability. Thanks to its 800-volt architecture, this Ioniq is one of the few vehicles on the road capable of leveraging the full potential of 350-kW Level 3 DC fast chargers. With a peak charging rate of 239 kW for large-battery models (base models are limited to 195 kW), the Ioniq 5 can charge from 10% to 80% in as little as 18 minutes. This charging speed rivals the time it takes for an average fuel stop, including restroom breaks and refreshments during a road trip. Furthermore, Hyundai continues to enhance the Ioniq 5’s charging performance through over-the-air updates, with the ultimate goal of making DC fast charging truly comparable to refueling a gasoline-powered vehicle. The Ioniq 5 also stands out as one of the few production EVs offering vehicle-to-load (V2L) capability, allowing the charge port to function as a standard 120-volt outlet for powering external devices.
Performance of Intended Function
Despite its unconventional hatchback-like styling, the Hyundai Ioniq 5 excels in performing the core functions expected of an SUV. For starters, its interior space is remarkably generous. With a wheelbase longer than Hyundai’s full-size Palisade SUV, wheels pushed out to the very corners of the platform, and a completely flat floor, the Ioniq 5’s cabin feels open, airy, and exceptionally welcoming. Passengers in both the front and rear seats will find ample room for themselves and their belongings, enjoying an upright and commanding view of their surroundings. Storage solutions are plentiful, including a clever center console that can slide forward and backward by 5.5 inches, as well as numerous storage cubbies thoughtfully integrated throughout the interior. Buyer’s guide director Zach Gale noted, “Enormous open space in the center console means you can easily fit a large bag there. Or at least two tubs of ice cream.” While the Ioniq lacks a traditional front trunk (frunk), it compensates with a spacious, multi-tiered cargo area—perfect for storing additional provisions.
The driving experience is equally impressive. Our 2022 test vehicle (functionally identical to the 2026 model) proved to be both comfortable and refined during everyday driving, yet capable of delivering engaging and genuinely fun performance when the driver desired. The electric motors provide smooth and potent acceleration, offering performance reminiscent of a V-8 engine in a segment typically dominated by noisy, underpowered four-cylinder powertrains. The braking system feels natural and responsive, with Hyundai offering five different settings for regenerative braking, including a fully disengaged mode, a one-pedal driving mode, and an automatic mode that seamlessly blends regenerative and friction braking.
