Audi has been bringing high-performance all-wheel-drive wagons to the global market for decades, dating back to the legendary 1994 RS2 Avant, a model developed with crucial assistance from Porsche. After many years of neglecting the U.S. market, Audi Sport finally introduced an RS Avant wagon to American shores with the C8-generation Audi RS6 Avant. This high-performance wagon has enjoyed surprising success in a country that historically eschewed long-roof vehicles in favor of SUVs. With this success in mind, it’s understandable that many were eagerly anticipating the arrival of the newly announced 2027 Audi RS5 Avant, which is expected to join the existing A5 and S5 hatchback sedans in the lineup.
Plug-in Hybrid Performance
Like its predecessor, the new 2027 Audi RS5 is equipped with a potent 2.9-liter twin-turbocharged V-6 engine, which produces an impressive 503 horsepower and 443 pound-feet of torque in this application. This represents a substantial increase of 66 horsepower over the previous model’s output of 444 horsepower, although the torque figures remain comparable. Audi attributes these significant performance gains to several engineering enhancements, including the implementation of two variable-geometry turbochargers, higher injection pressures, a shorter and less restrictive intake system, and the integration of advanced water-to-air intercoolers. Furthermore, by employing the Miller cycle combustion process, Audi claims the RS5’s new engine can achieve up to 20 percent better fuel efficiency under high-load conditions. As is standard practice with the RS5 lineage, all-wheel drive and an eight-speed automatic transmission come standard.

The transmission and a limited-slip differential work in tandem to intelligently distribute torque between the front and rear axles, with a range extending from 70/30 to 15/85. In practical terms, this means the RS5 can bias power to the front end when maximum traction is required or primarily drive the rear wheels for high-performance driving scenarios. Yes, this is an Audi that can indeed drift. The center differential features integrated preload, ensuring it remains partially locked at all times to enhance traction and handling stability.
For the first time in the history of Audi’s RS models, the brand is pairing the engine with an electric motor as part of its innovative new plug-in hybrid powertrain. The twin-turbo V-6 engine works harmoniously with an electric motor that generates 175 horsepower and 339 pound-feet of torque, resulting in combined peak system outputs of 630 horsepower and 608 pound-feet of torque. This places the new 2027 Audi RS5 directly in competition with the Mercedes-AMG E53 PHEV, which produces 604 horsepower and 554 pound-feet of torque. Audi claims an acceleration time of 0–62 mph (0–100 km/h) in just 3.6 seconds, a figure that we suspect is quite conservative given the prior-generation RS5 Sportback’s proven ability to achieve the same 0–60 mph time.

Power for the electric motor is supplied by a high-capacity battery with a total energy capacity of 25.9 kWh, of which 22.0 kWh is usable. Audi claims an impressive all-electric driving range of up to 54 miles in city driving conditions with this new setup. The vehicle’s electrical system utilizes advanced 400-volt architecture, enabling a maximum charging speed of 11 kW, which allows for a full charge to be completed in approximately 2.5 hours. Audi has eliminated the traditional 12-volt starter motor in this generation, relying instead on the new electric motor to start the RS5’s engine, thanks to the redundancy provided by the hybrid system.
To achieve peak power output and ensure optimal performance from the advanced torque vectoring system, the RS5’s battery must be charged to at least 90 percent when utilizing the RS Sport and RS Torque Rear drive modes. This requirement may seem like a notable compromise for a plug-in hybrid vehicle, but Audi engineers have programmed the vehicle to intelligently retain its battery charge when configured to either of these drive modes. A sophisticated network of pumps, fans, and heat exchangers works collaboratively to maintain the battery’s temperature at an ideal 68 degrees Fahrenheit (20 degrees Celsius).

The battery powers more than just the electric motor; it is strategically mounted beneath the trunk floor for optimal weight distribution. The battery cells also supply up to 8 kW of power to a permanent-magnet synchronous motor integrated into the sedan and wagon’s innovative electro-mechanical torque-vectoring system, which Audi refers to as Dynamic Torque Control. This advanced technology actively manages and redistributes torque between the rear wheels through a sophisticated combination of an actuator, specialized overdrive gears, and a differential. The system performs complex recalibrations and adjustments at an astonishing frequency of 200 Hz, meaning it makes decisions and adjustments once every five milliseconds.
Further enhancements to the vehicle’s chassis include the introduction of RS-specific front and rear axles, as well as an RS sport suspension system featuring advanced twin-valve shock absorbers and active dampers. The 2027 Audi RS5 also benefits from a unique steering tune that is distinct from that of the standard A5 and S5 models. Audi offers a choice of 20-inch and 21-inch wheels, which can be fitted with either standard steel brakes or the available high-performance carbon-ceramic brakes.

Dimensions, Packaging, and Customization
In true Audi fashion, the bodywork of the 2027 RS5 has been significantly widened by 3.5 inches, creating a striking fender-flared appearance. The hatchback-sedan body style has a curb weight of 5,192 pounds, while the Avant wagon variant weighs slightly more at 5,225 pounds. This represents a substantial weight increase of over 1,000 pounds compared to the last RS5 Sportback we tested, which weighed in at 4,103 pounds.
The front fascia features a model-specific interpretation of Audi’s iconic single-frame grille, distinguished by its intricate honeycomb pattern and flanked by aerodynamically optimized air curtains designed to control airflow. At the rear, both RS5 variants are equipped with a pronounced rear diffuser and Audi Sport’s signature oval exhaust tips, signaling their high-performance credentials. Advanced LED exterior lighting with a distinctive checkered-flag pattern serves as a visual cue to the model’s motorsport heritage. Buyers have a choice of nine available paint colors, including the striking Ascari Blue, the classic Mythos Black, and the vibrant Progressive Red.
Inside the cabin, Audi has equipped the new RS5 with a state-of-the-art single-pane digital interface that seamlessly integrates an 11.9-inch digital instrument cluster and a large 14.5-inch touchscreen display. Setting the RS5 apart from the standard A5 and S5 models, this performance variant includes specialized software for route analytics, dedicated sector timing functionality for racetracks, and an innovative drift-angle logging feature. Additionally, performance-logging applications are available on the passenger-side touchscreen, allowing enthusiasts to monitor their driving metrics in real-time.
