The report places the blame on “technical issues.” Representatives for Scout have denied the delay but have not addressed the allegations of technical problems.

Both the Terra pickup and the Traveler SUV will be offered as both EVs and Harvester EREVs. Scout initially planned to lead with the EV models, but with more than 80 percent of pre-orders opting for the range extender, the company announced it would prioritize those models.\n\nADVERTISEMENT – CONTINUE READING BELOW\nThis has been much more difficult than it sounds, according to the report. Volkswagen and Scout are leaning heavily on their joint venture with competitor Rivian for software and zonal electrical architecture, both of which Rivian originally developed for EVs. While they can be adapted for EREVs, the report says it’s not a priority for Rivian, which only sells EVs. As a result, the project is delayed and Volkswagen’s poorly regarded Cariad software division has had to step in to bridge the gap.\n\nScout Traveler SUV Exterior\nScout Traveler Concept\n\nWhile Scout hasn’t confirmed this, it aligns with our previous reporting. The Porsche 911 T-Hybrid models were the first vehicles within the greater Volkswagen Group to utilize Rivian technology, and Porsche engineers told MotorTrend significant work went into adapting it to function with a combustion engine.\n\nThe Der Spiegel report goes on to say development has also been delayed by the Terra and Traveler’s unusual layout. As they were originally designed to be EVs only, no consideration was given as to fitting a gasoline engine. Adding one to the plan later required some creative engineering, with Scout engineers placing the four-cylinder engine on its side under the rear cargo area or truck bed, behind the rear axle. It’s not just the engine itself, either, as engineers also had to find space for the engine’s cooling system, exhaust, and fuel tank.\n\nScout has not addressed this allegation, either, but there are indications it’s correct. Engines, even small ones, are heavy; placing one at the rear of the vehicle is going to have knock-on effects on weight distribution and payload capacity, at minimum. Scout CEO Scott Keogh confirmed on an episode of Jay Leno’s Garage the EREV Harvester models will have as little as half the towing capacity of the EV models, limited to just 5,000 pounds. Every pound counts toward the Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (the maximum allowable weight of a fully loaded vehicle) and Gross Combined Weight Rating (the maximum allowable combined weight of the vehicle and trailer).\n\nFurther, MotorTrend sources tell us the extra weight in the back is wreaking havoc on payload capacity and tongue weight (how much weight you can put on the trailer hitch), both of which are crucial to truck buyers. The EREVs, particularly the Terra pickup, would be far less attractive to some customers if they could only carry light loads and pull light trailers given how large they are. The last two years have been rough financially, and 2025 was particularly bad for the company in America as its profitable Audi and Porsche brands were hit with unexpected tariffs by the Trump Administration.\n\nAs a result, Group CEO Oliver Blume has been instituting austerity measures and indicated big cuts are on the way. According to Der Spiegel, the billions of dollars being spent on Scout is causing tension in the wider company as other brands go without or face cuts. The Scout factory, which is built and now being outfitted with production machinery, has a capacity of 250,000 vehicles per year, far more than Scout needs. An Audi model based on Scout’s architecture is believed to be in the works and would help consume some of that capacity, but Group executives are reportedly worried the plant is just too big and the project too ambitious.\n\nCompetitive Issues\n\nScout also now faces more competition than when it revealed the Terra and Traveler back in late 2024 when only one other EREV was even on the drawing board.
