Full rescue here: T2409027_Injured Animal Finally Receives Help The 2026 Dodge Charger Sixpack: Redefining the Muscle Car Identity in the EV Era Back in the early 2000s, when classic American muscle cars were still attainable for the average enthusiast, I distinctly remember forgoing a vintage Chevrolet Chevelle after watching the iconic car chase in the film Bullitt. While Steve McQueen’s Mustang fastback embodied effortless cool, it was the menacing, hubcap-chucking, triple-black 1968 Dodge Charger R/T, driven by the villain, that truly captured my imagination. The legend that racer and Hollywood car builder Max Balchowsky had to significantly modify the Mustang’s 390-cubic-inch V8 just to keep pace with the 440-powered Charger only amplified its mystique. That experience eventually led me to purchase a big-block-equipped ’68 Charger of my own—a car that spent more time on a lift than on the pavement before I ultimately parted ways with it. To this day, I still feel a pang of nostalgia for that machine. After stints in a few Fox-body Mustangs and some more sensible daily drivers better suited for Los Angeles traffic, I returned to the Mopar family when Dodge resurrected the Challenger for the 2009 model year. Unlike its predecessor, both the 2009 SRT8 and the then-new R/T models were available with a six-speed manual transmission, a non-negotiable criterion for me. I drove that black R/T for several years, eventually parlaying that experience into an automotive journalism career. Despite having the opportunity to drive a wide array of incredible machinery, I only sold the R/T to upgrade to a manual-equipped Challenger SRT Hellcat. In my eyes, the Hellcat was the physical embodiment of the outlandish ideas I used to doodle in the margins of my math notebooks—bold, excessive, and radiating pure hooligan energy. It resonated with me on a visceral level. What Truly Defines a Muscle Car? The debate over the precise definition of a muscle car has raged for decades, but for me, the criteria are refreshingly straightforward: a rear-wheel-drive, front-engine, intermediate-body car equipped with a burly V8 engine. Ideally, it should also exude an unapologetically extroverted personality, possess a slightly unhinged dynamic character, and be available with a manual transmission. The 2026 Dodge Charger Sixpack checks none of these boxes. However, it does seem to draw inspiration from other facets of the Charger’s rich heritage, a point we’ll explore further shortly. Dodge’s full-sized LX platform cars never perfectly aligned with the traditional muscle car mold. Yet, they received a pass from the motoring public because today’s consumers don’t purchase rear-wheel-drive passenger cars in sufficient volumes to justify automakers developing multiple models to compete across various segments. Beyond that, Dodge simply understood the assignment. Times have changed dramatically, though, and in the wake of the automaker’s recent identity crisis, I feel the very concept of the muscle car has been stretched beyond its reasonable limits.
Dodge now markets the Charger as the most powerful muscle car on the market. But while it’s true that certain versions of the latest Charger surpass the Ford Mustang Dark Horse in terms of horsepower, I find myself questioning the criteria Dodge is using to classify the Charger Sixpack as a muscle car. Now offered alongside the all-electric Charger Daytona EV, every iteration of the Sixpack is powered by a 3.0-liter twin-turbocharged Hurricane inline-six engine. This boosted mill produces 420 horsepower in the R/T models, while the Scat Pack variants feature a high-output version delivering a formidable 550 hp. All-wheel drive comes standard on all current Charger models, as does an automatic transmission (or, in the case of the Charger Daytona, a single-speed direct-drive unit). Considering that the Charger Sixpack is nearly a foot and a half longer and approximately 1,000 pounds heavier than the Mustang, it’s increasingly difficult to view them as direct competitors. Six Cylinders, All-Wheel Drive, and an Extra Thousand Pounds Let me be clear: the “Bludicrous” Charger Sixpack Scat Pack I recently spent time with possesses considerable charisma, and its exterior styling pays commendable homage to the second-generation Charger in numerous ways. The interior design also represents a significant upgrade from the LX cars, thanks not only to its modernized technology but also to its improved ergonomics. However, what struck me most was that this well-optioned, ostensibly performance-focused model was delivered to me here in Los Angeles equipped with all-season tires and a suspension featuring conventional, non-adaptive dampers. A few minutes spent exploring the online configurator revealed that there is currently no option to spec adaptive dampers, summer tires, and a more aggressively tuned Competition suspension setup on a Charger Sixpack—all of which are available for the Charger Daytona EV. Consequently, the Sixpack was simply outgunned on almost every front when we recently compared its instrumented test figures to a similarly priced Mustang Dark Horse. Comfort First, Performance Second To its credit, the Charger Sixpack is a significantly more livable car for daily driving. Its substantial dimensions translate to a spacious cabin and ample cargo room, and there are still enough physical controls to keep essential functions easily accessible without diverting attention from the road. The suspension tuning is similarly judicious, striking a commendable balance between ride quality and body control during everyday driving scenarios. And while its nasal growl sounds more akin to what one might expect from a BMW than a Dodge, the high-output Hurricane delivers a substantial surge of power with minimal turbo lag. The dynamic experience shifts, however, when you begin to push the car. Without the benefit of adjustable dampers, that sensible suspension tuning results in noticeable amounts of dive, squat, and body roll. When combined with a soft brake pedal and tires that readily relinquish grip when attacking a corner with intent, the car simply doesn’t seem particularly eager to be driven hard.
The aforementioned unavailable upgrades would undoubtedly make a significant difference in this regard. But the truth is, the car’s sheer size and weight will always be a considerable handicap when compared to most other similarly priced performance coupes. For this reason, I believe Dodge is doing the Charger Sixpack a disservice by characterizing it as a muscle car instead of fully embracing what it is: a personal luxury vehicle. Perhaps It Was Never Intended to Be a Muscle Car Although the concept dates back to the 1920s, personal luxury vehicles truly came into their own during the 1970s with iconic models like the Buick Riviera, Ford Thunderbird, and Chrysler Cordoba. Setting aside the obligatory Corinthian leather jokes, these massive coupes offered buyers significant style and the suggestion of performance, but their ultimate emphasis was on comfort and premium amenities rather than outright capability. This aligns perfectly with the two-door Charger Sixpack’s inherent strengths: head-turning aesthetics; a spacious, well-appointed interior; refined ride quality; and a smooth, unobtrusive powertrain that excels in a supporting role rather than as the center of attention. This wouldn’t be an unprecedented shift for the Charger nameplate, either. The fourth-generation Charger SE, which shared its platform architecture with the Cordoba, adopted a similarly luxury-focused persona in the mid-1970s. Dodge could further capitalize on the Charger Sixpack’s new positioning by incorporating premium features from the Ram and Jeep parts bins, such as massaging seats, McIntosh audio system components, and high-end upholstery materials. The 2026 Dodge Charger Sixpack may not possess the same crystalline clarity of purpose as that black R/T roaring through the streets of San Francisco over half a century ago. However, with a few strategic refinements to the options list and a revised marketing approach, it could very well spark a modern resurgence of a different kind.
