Yet another school of thought classifies any hatchback larger than a standard sedan as an SUV. While the functional expectations of an SUV are broadly agreed upon—comfort, capability, and versatility—the aesthetic and structural parameters remain fluid. As the Supreme Court grappled with defining obscenity, Justice Potter Stewart famously concluded, “I know it when I see it.” Similarly, the automotive industry has long relied on an intuitive understanding of what makes a great SUV.
A truly exceptional SUV must inspire unwavering confidence. It needs to excel in the daily commute, prove its mettle on extended road trips, and demonstrate competence across varying weather conditions, from driving rain to light off-road excursions. Space is non-negotiable; both passengers and their belongings must fit comfortably in every row. Safety and reasonable efficiency are foundational pillars, and while not strictly mandatory, stylish design certainly enhances the appeal.
For years, the debate over the precise definition of an SUV has raged, but the most objective arbiter remains the rigorous testing and comprehensive criteria applied during our annual Of The Year evaluations. Irrespective of individual interpretations, the clear frontrunner in this year’s diverse field of contenders handily satisfies the multifaceted demands of the compact SUV segment—and then some. It captivates with its aesthetics, delights with its driving dynamics, offers substantial interior volume, ensures passenger comfort, maintains commendable efficiency, and presents an outstanding value proposition. As many astute observers have already surmised, the vehicle in question is our 2026 SUV of the Year: the Hyundai Ioniq 5.
The 2026 Hyundai Ioniq 5 represents a landmark achievement in electric vehicle design, marking the first time a fully electric model has claimed our prestigious SUV of the Year award. This vehicle isn’t merely an iteration of existing technology; it is a fundamental reimagining of what an SUV can be. The Ioniq 5 strikes an intelligent balance between approachability and innovation. Its form factor and control interfaces are immediately familiar to drivers transitioning from traditional internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles, easing the adoption of electric mobility. Simultaneously, its packaging and performance capabilities are only made possible through the integration of compact, high-energy-density electric motors.
Perhaps the most significant technological advantage offered by the Ioniq 5 is its cutting-edge 800-volt electrical architecture. This system positions the vehicle among the fastest-charging EVs currently available, with charging times that rival the duration of a typical rest stop on a long-distance journey. Adding to its exceptional value, the Ioniq 5 undercuts the price of other vehicles equipped with similar high-voltage technology by a considerable margin. In essence, no vehicle in our expansive 2026 SUV of the Year field, which comprises thirty-three distinct models, adheres more faithfully to our six core award criteria than the groundbreaking Hyundai Ioniq 5.
Advancement in Design
The exterior styling of the Ioniq 5 is precisely where one might first question its classification as an SUV. With a steeply raked tailgate, the absence of a traditional D-pillar, and a modest ground clearance of just over six inches—barely more than that of a conventional sedan—the Hyundai’s profile leans more toward a midsize hatchback than a traditional compact SUV. Nonetheless, the Ioniq 5 stands out as one of the most visually arresting mainstream vehicles to debut in recent memory. Drawing inspiration from the Giugiaro-designed Hyundai Pony concept from decades past, the Ioniq 5 masterfully blends retrofuturistic, 8-bit-inspired aesthetics with sharp geometric edges and distinctive lighting signatures. This design language serves as an expert exercise in evoking nostalgia for the Gen X and Millennial generations.
“I absolutely love the interior and exterior styling,” remarked digital director Erik Johnson. “It’s like a Trapper Keeper with Max Headroom on its cover that I might have carried to elementary school, but now it’s on wheels.” Associate editor Duncan Brady echoed this sentiment, specifically highlighting the unique hash marks along the wheel arches and the exceptionally stylish wheels as standout features.
The interior design complements the exterior’s success, even though some judges expressed a wish that Hyundai’s interior designers had embraced the same level of playful creativity evident in the vehicle’s exterior. The cockpit of this EV is characterized by its clean, uncluttered, and intuitive layout. It features twin 12.3-inch digital displays, a minimalist two-spoke steering wheel devoid of brand badging, and a judicious mix of physical buttons, knobs, and switches. “Hyundai really sweated the details and smoothed out the user experience,” noted head of editorial Ed Loh. “This is a great transitional EV—it feels new yet familiar. It includes a push-button start, which most people understand, and numerous physical knobs for selecting drive modes and adjusting settings, providing positive tactile feedback. There’s no ambiguity from capacitive controls or the need to constantly check a screen to confirm your inputs. It achieves a simplicity and elegance that is deceptively difficult to master.”
Engineering Excellence
Beneath the skin of this stylish exterior lies Hyundai Motor Group’s state-of-the-art E-GMP (Electric Global Modular Platform) architecture. This same advanced platform underpins the Kia EV6 (a finalist for our 2023 award) and the Genesis GV60, as well as future models in the Ioniq family. The E-GMP platform’s exceptional versatility has enabled Hyundai Motor Group’s three brands to develop three distinct electric SUVs with varying wheelbase lengths and hardpoint locations, all while sharing the same battery and motor components. This approach allows customers to benefit from greater choice and access to advanced technologies at more competitive price points.
For the Ioniq 5, Hyundai offers a choice between two battery and motor configurations. The base model, the Ioniq 5 SE Standard Range, is equipped with a 58.0-kWh battery pack paired with a single, rear-mounted electric motor. This configuration delivers 168 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque, achieving an EPA-estimated range of 220 miles. Moving up one step on the trim ladder unlocks the larger 77.4-kWh battery pack. Rear-wheel-drive variants with the larger battery feature an enhanced motor producing 225 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque, while the optional dual-motor all-wheel-drive variants offer a substantial 320 horsepower and 446 lb-ft of torque. All-wheel-drive Ioniq 5 models can travel 256 miles on a full charge (an impressive 266 miles for 2023 models), while the single-motor variant achieves an even more remarkable 303 miles between charges.
The charging speed of the Ioniq 5 is equally impressive. Thanks to its 800-volt architecture, this Ioniq is one of the few vehicles on the market capable of utilizing 350-kW Level 3 DC fast chargers. With a peak charging rate of 239 kW for large-battery models (base models are limited to 195 kW), the Ioniq 5 can charge from 10 to 80 percent in as little as 18 minutes. This charging time is comparable to the duration of an average fuel stop, rest break, and coffee break during a road trip in a conventional vehicle. Furthermore, Hyundai has indicated its ongoing commitment to improving charging speeds through over-the-air updates, with the ultimate goal of making DC fast charging comparable to the convenience of a traditional gasoline fill-up. The Ioniq 5 also stands out as one of the few production EVs offering vehicle-to-load (V2L) capability, allowing an adapter to convert the charge port into a standard 120-volt outlet for powering external devices.
Performance of Intended Function
Despite its unconventional hatchback-like styling, the Hyundai Ioniq 5 performs admirably when evaluated against the criteria we expect from an SUV. To begin with, it is exceptionally spacious. Possessing a wheelbase longer than that of Hyundai’s full-size Palisade SUV, with its wheels positioned at the absolute corners of the vehicle and a perfectly flat floor, the Ioniq 5’s cabin is remarkably open, airy, and welcoming. Both adult and child passengers will find every row spacious and comfortable, offering an upright and commanding view of their surroundings. Storage capacity is also plentiful, whether utilizing the ingenious center console (which slides 5.5 inches fore and aft) or the various cubbies integrated throughout the interior. “The center console offers an enormous open space, making it easy to fit a large bag there,” observed buyer’s guide director Zach Gale. “Or at least two tubs of ice cream.” And while the Ioniq lacks a front trunk (frunk), it compensates with a generously sized, tiered cargo area for additional storage—perhaps, fittingly, for more ice cream.
